Eldar - Guardian Defenders painted

Spent enough time painting tanks and other big things recently, so it was time to spend some time on the infantry! I have to admit, I'm getting tired of painting blue and yellow so it's about time to move on to something new but before that happens the unit of Guardian Defenders got a lashing of paint!

Pretty straightforward - I went with the same blue recipe used on the vehicles, but rather than sponging the various blues, I went with a mix of drybrushing and stippling with an old brush. The blue wash then tied it all together and muted it a bit. I knew I didn't want to go crazy with the yellow, so just the helmets and a couple bits of cloth got the hot orange/golden yellow treatment.

Once that was done, the weapons got the bone color, and then I went in and painted the umpteen zillion little tiny gems. Probably could have gotten away without that step, but since there's just going to be the one unit of guardians they deserved a little extra work. Overall, a right serviceable unit who will likely hang back and sit on an objective (and get carved into ribbons by whatever looks at them funny).

Next up? Who knows? I would like to try a different color scheme, so maybe some Warp Spiders, or maybe something from an entirely different army. Always good to have other things to work on if one's enthusiasm begins to wane...

Battle Reports - 4th (5th) of July Battle, 2013

My buddy Dave over at Ex Fide Vivo and I usually throw down for a game of 40k over the 4th of July weekend each year, though in this case it'll actually be on the 5th due to some commitments with the band. I spent some time setting up the table and pulling out the army, and figured I'd snap a few pre-game pics!

Here's the 2000 point Eldar army I'll be fielding:

HQ
Farseer
Wraithseer
2 Warlocks (1 w/Singing Spear, 1 w/Witchblade)

Troops
10 Dire Avengers
10 Guardian Defenders
10 Corsairs (Storm Guardians)
5 Wraithblades

Elites
6 Firedragons w/ Exarch
6 Striking Scorpions w/Exarch

Fast Attack
1 Crimson Hunter Exarch

Heavy Support
1 Wraithknight
1 Falcon (Scatter Laser, Pulse Laser)

Dedicated Transports
2 Wave Serpents (1 w/Brightlances, 1 w/Starcannons)

1994 points

Dave is bringing his Blood Angels, so I fully expect to be carved into little chunks in short order. No better than the poncy, pointy-eared gits deserve, I suppose! Heh.

Surprising absolutely no one, I opted for an urban themed table. When I lay out a table for a game, I usually go diagonally, it helps give the impression that the battlefield extends off in every direction. It also helps to break up sight lines across the table moreso than a perpendicularly arranged layout would. One of the tenets that I follow is "start old and build up" which means I'll place terrain in the following order: Rivers > Hills > Roads > Buildings. In a future post where I'll actually have all those terrain types on the table I'll do a more thorough explanation, but suffice it to say I started off by laying out a grid of roads after which I laid out the buildings. I'll usually put the largest/tallest buildings in the center of the table, then work outward from there using smaller and smaller pieces. After that I'll start putting in the ground clutter/visual fluff - at the moment I've just done a few craters, but there will be fencing and vehicles and barricades and such by the time we kick off!

A shot from the other side of the table also gives a view into the churning mass of hobby stuff that's in various stages of done-ness, while the Closet of Doom looms just off to the left out of frame. I do like having a nice open airy room to work on hobby stuff three seasons out of the year, but it certainly does get murderously hot up there in the summertime. We're planning on kicking off around 8-9am to try and get done before the temperature soars and all our miniatures melt! I don't plan on doing a full-blown battle report, but there will be pics to follow - since Dave's army is completely painted and mine is nearly so, there should be some cool shots (of me getting my butt kicked)!

Eldar - Crimson Hunter painting in progress

It was a nice long 4th of July weekend here stateside and it was jam packed with fun stuff! Couple barbeques, a gig with the band, a game of 40k (for which my buddy Dave has done a great write-up) and some painting time. I had gotten a little tired of painting blue and yellow, so I thought it may be time for some red! I'd put together a Crimson Hunter Exarch taking build cues from the excellent Todd Sherman over at SincaiN40k - I'm not a big fan of the top forward fins that GW suggests, so the Hemlock tailfin was added instead. Definitely a better look!

I started off by laying down a base coat of Dark Fleshtone, and then started doing some drybrushing on the leading edges with Red Gore, Blood Red and Hot Orange, trying to blend them together to make a nice gradient. Once that was done, I hit it with a Carroburg Crimson wash to tie it all together and mute it down a little.

After that, I started picking out the various panels and engines in black and leather (which is the basecoat that the bone color will be built on. So far so good! I'm still sorting through pictures from the game on the 5th, turns out I didn't have the anti-shaky-cam on and a LOT of my pics were blurred to the point of uselessness. Curses!

Eldar - Crimson Hunter Painted

Braved the heat up in the hobby loft to finish up the Crimson Hunter after work today. All in all I decided to keep it simple, and let the red fade take center stage on the model. It is called a Crimson Hunter, after all! The leather brown from earlier acted as the base for the bone colored panels, weapons and engines.

The canopy got the same treatment as the rest of the vehicles in the army to help tie it all together. On the other hand, the red gems that I've been adding to all the predominantly blue vehicles wouldn't really work against the red on the flyer, so I went with blue gems instead - sort of a reversal of the Alaitoc scheme!

All in all a rather fun model to build and paint - it was amusing to paint an Eldar model in what was essentially the same paint scheme as my old Dark Eldar army! There's not really a whole lot left to paint in the army at this point:

A couple aspect warrior squads, a unit of Wraithblades and a mess o' characters. I'm saving the characters for last, and I think knocking out the Dire Avengers will be next, just to churn through the largest remaining unit. I'm hoping to have the army done in time to put it up on the auction block prior to GenCon, and raise a little extra spending money for the trip!

Eldar - The army so far...

Just a quick post today - Couple folks have asked for a group shot of the Eldar, so I laid them out in roughly the same setup as the painting chart and snapped a pic over my lunchbreak today while I had some relatively decent light:

It's definitely a colorful army! I have gotten the basic blue laid down on the Dire Avengers, I'm trying to ensure they are done up in a different style/shade of blue from the earlier Guardians - a little lighter, and done in a wash-over-white primer style similar to the Fire Dragons and Striking Scorpions. I dabbled with the Warp Spiders but didn't like the 'brown recluse' scheme so they'll likely get a bath in Simple Green and start anew soon!

Imperial Guard - Leviathan Command Carrier painting begins!

Summer is fully upon us and it's been pushing 100F day after day - which has made the hobby loft a thoroughly miserable place. However, we had a brief respite and I took advantage for a few hours over the weekend. I was getting a little tired of painting Eldar and thought I'd switch gears a little before jumping back in for the big push to finish off the pointy-eared gits. With Apocalypse being released recently, there was really on one thing I could paint... The Leviathan! My buddy Dave suggested that I give craft paints a go on the Leviathan as there was going to be so much paint needed to cover the beast, and he gave me several bottles to try. Time to break out the BIG brush!

Now obviously this is just the start of blocking in the colors and there are many, many more coats to go before it's anywhere near done - craft paints are way more translucent than I'm used to so what is usually three coats of paint is going to have to be six or more before it stops looking streaky. However, blocking in the main areas definitely helps the monster come into focus as a model. I'll admit that I'm not totally happy with the build - suffice it to say I learned a lot about what doesn't work, but that's mostly because I aimed well outside my current skill level. Can't get better if you don't push the envelope from time to time though! That said, it's not bad either - I won't feel embarrassed putting it on the table. The plan is to take it down to Feast of Blades to participate in the narrative Apocalypse event, along with a couple other suitably Apocalyptic units. Should be a (apocalyptic mega) blast!

Eldar - Dire Avengers painting in process

Popped home for lunch and snapped a quick pic of the Dire Avengers in process while I had some good light. I went with a brighter blue than the Guardians to help differentiate them as an aspect warrior unit rather than just another Alaitoc squad.

Still quite a bit of highlighting, detailing and basing to do of course, and I'm considering how I ought to finish of the helmet crests - I'm torn between leaving them solid yellow as-is, or perhaps adding some black (or possibly red) stripes to them as shown in the codex. Thoughts? Once these are done I think it'll be time to bite the bullet and start in on the Warp Spiders - definitely time to do something other than blue and yellow!

Had a surprisingly free Saturday for a change, and I was able to take advantage of the relatively cool morning to finish off the Dire Avengers!

I took a couple pictures, but the white-background ones completely blew out the white on the models. So back to the old-school picture style (which to be honest I prefer)! Painting all the little gems was a chore, I found that on average each one had about 25. Oof!

I've started laying down the base colors on the Warp Spiders, but nothing worth taking pictures of. I'm hoping to have them finished by the end of the weekend though!

Eldar - Warp Spiders painted

In the home stretch now! Finished off the Warp Spiders this morning and snapped a few pics. I have to say that these are my least favorite models in the range - I feel the sculpts are just a little too chunky and static compared to the current plastics.

I went with a really deep blood red and bone as the main colors, similar to the Crimson Hunter but a tone darker overall. The heads needed something to help them pop so I went with a gold highlight and a black helmet. The weapon barrels and hoses were given a pass of jade green and scorpion green.

On the back I tried my hand at drawing in some spiderweb patterns which aren't brilliant, but they'll do the job. My buddy Dave suggested adding the spider-y aspect symbols on the webs, so I'm practicing drawing it before I try my hand at adding them to the models (and cleaning up a little of the sloppy webbing).

At this point there are exactly 13 models left to paint - a 5-strong unit of Wraithblades and a mess of characters. In order to keep the blue consistent I figured I'd do them all at the same time - at a certain point in the process I'll split them into smaller groups (or individuals), but for now it's a good way to get a big chunk of the color scheme out of the way all at once!

Eldar - The last of the army; batch painting begins!

With just a double handful of models left to finish in the Eldar army I figured I'd do my usual batch painting process to get as many of the colors common to all the models done at the same time. At some point in the process I'll have to break them out into discrete groups to finish them off, but the blue, yellow and bone are all going to go on them in one big group.

I'd posted a pic of the models with the initial midnight blue, and this morning before work I got up and knocked out the rest of the blue process. After all the relevant bits were hit with midnight blue, I did three more drybrush passes with ultramarine blue, magic blue and ice blue followed by a guilliman blue wash. Next up will be all the bone color (leather brown > bleached bone > devlan mud > bleached bone), followed by the yellow (hot orange > fiery orange > golden yellow). Once that's in place it'll be detail work aplenty!

So far so good! Definitely on track to have the army done by the end of the week, then up on the auction block it'll go!

Eldar - Painting the wraithbone

A bit more forward motion on the Eldar this morning and this afternoon after work - finished up the wraithbone, and took some pics between each stage to show how I do it:

Starting off I basecoat anything that's intended to be bone with leather brown. The vallejo bone color is pretty translucent and the brown helps give it a warmer undertone than painting it directly onto a black or blue basecoat.

After that is dry, I give the area a few coats of the bone color. Essentially I do a really heavy drybrush, leaving only the very deepest of recesses showing any of the leather basecoat. Another way of saying that is "missed a bit, there". Heh.

Next up is a Devlan Mud wash (aka army painter ink strong tone), to bring a little depth back to the recesses and stop it from looking as flat. This is applied in the "slather a bunch of Devlan Mud all over everything" method.

Once that is fully dry I go in and give the areas a light-to-medium drybrush of the bone color again, concentrating on the upper surfaces especially. That helps the model stop looking like I just slathered a bunch of Devlan Mud all over everything in the previous step.

I'm pretty happy with the psyker contingent thus far, I especially like how the amount of bone steadily increases as it goes Warlock > Farseer > Wraithseer > Bonesinger. Next up is the yellow stage - chugging right along!

Eldar - Painting the yellow and general cleanup

$

Pressing onwards with the group painting - laid down the yellow and did some general cleanup of things I've missed on the first pass. My yellow recipe is pretty straightforward, I start off by base coating anything that's intended to be yellow in Hot Orange. Much like the bone in the previous post, the yellow is very translucent, and I find that painting it directly over a black or other dark undercoat it tends to look very patchy. The orange 'shines' through the yellow and gives it a nice warm glow.

Once that dried I hit it with a quick drybrush of Fiery Orange - I was in the zone and didn't take a picture of that step though. Once the orange is on, I went in and layered on the Golden Yellow followed by a quick hit of Casadora Yellow wash.

At this stage I discovered a couple things I missed on the bone color step, so I went back and painted in the weapons on the Autarch, as well as the knee and elbow joints on the Wraithblades. I also started blocking in the areas that will end up being leather (boots, pouches, etc.) with Earth Brown.

At this point I'm thinking it's time to break the batch painting up into its constituent parts to do the final detailing. Expect more pics of various parts of these guys in a completed state soon!

Eldar - Not exactly batch painting, but still...

No painting time this morning (the snooze button's siren call would not be denied), so just a little forward progress today. At this point in the process, I broke up the batch into smaller groups so I could focus on the colors that wouldn't necessarily be shared across all the models. On the other hand, I ended up working a little on each of 'em so it's still sort of batch painting! Heh.

The seers with witchblades and singing spears got their blades done up in purple (still in progress, gonna try and add some lightning), and I started blocking in the areas which will eventually be white with Shadow Grey - This will then get passes with fortress grey and ghost grey, with only the very uppermost edges with pure white. The farseer's cloak, the fur on one of the warlocks and the hair on the other will all end up getting the treatment.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with the spiritseer and bonesinger spot-color-wise yet, so they just got a little touch up here and there. Eventually they'll get runes and such on their cloaks in white, but I want to work the purple from the warlocks and farseer in there somewhere.

On the advice of my buddy Dave, I'm going with red blades (which will eventually transition up to orange and yellow). So far, I'm really digging how it sets off against the blue!

Last up are Illic Nightspear and the Autarch - started blocking in their cloaks, though in retrospect I'm going to re-do the Autarch's cloak to match Illics. Think I'll save the white for the seer council models.

I always wince taking pictures close up like this. It definitely shows up all the issues and mistakes and places I've missed that I still need to address - oof! However, looking at the pics helps me understand what I need to practice on!

Eldar - Wraithblades painted

Disaster struck today when I didn't pay heed to my instinct that it was too humid and tried sealing some miniatures. Frosted the lot of 'em. ARGH.

However, this isn't the end of the world, and I've found that brushing on some gloss varnish over the worst of it and re-spray-sealing the models they can usually recover from my rookie mistake. The Wraithblades were the least affected so I snapped a couple pics:

The blades were done up in a graduated red which sets off against the blue and yellow pretty well. They were done by starting with a dark flesh basecoat, then worked up from gory red through hot orange, followed by a wash of carroburg crimson. The blue and gems follow the same recipe as found on the other Alaitoc models in the army. Easy peasy!

Definitely a fun unit to build and paint, and they've worked rather well on the table so far as well! Next up is the Seer Council, which were unfortunately a bit more effected by the frosting and actually required some full-on painted touch ups... That'll teach me to disregard my own advice on spray sealing, I guess!

Eldar - (subset of) The army going onto the auction block

With GenCon rapidly approaching, and the unexpected cost of a new pair of glasses cropping up last week, it's time to put the Eldar up for sale. I'd been waffling about what exactly was going up on the block as I did want to keep a small allied contingent for my guard. I finally settled on what that would be (Bonesinger, Wraithblades, Corsairs and the Crimson Hunter) but the rest is getting the chop. I went through and snapped a new set of pics of what all will be up for sale over the next couple days, and figured I'd share 'em here:

All in all I really had a blast painting this army, all the various color schemes helped to stave off Army Painter's Fatigue and it was surprisingly easy to stay on task and keep cranking them out. Expect to see a lot more Hobby ADHD over the next few months as I ricochet crazily around the half dozen other projects that lurk within the Closet of Doom!

Blatant Self Advertisement - Eldar on eBay

Time to stuff the pointy-eared gits into the webway and off to their next destination - the vast majority of the Eldar I've been working on of late are now up on the auction block to help pay for a new pair of glasses (boo!) and act as some extra spending money for GenCon (woo!). Note that as a general rule, I don't sell or ship overseas anymore due to the ludicrous price increases in shipping costs. However, if you are a follower of the blog in good standing and are interested in bidding please contact me via email, I'm willing to make exceptions on a case-by-case basis (just bear in mind that the actual shipping costs will need to be determined at the end of the auction).

A couple folks have asked for an army shot so I snapped a couple quick pics over my lunch hour. They certainly are... Colorful! All in all a thoroughly enjoyable army to paint, and I'm looking forward to applying some of the techniques I used on these guys in my future projects. The sponge effect really worked out well and I'm thinking it may be fun to use that technique to apply weathering to the dozens of guard tanks that are lurking in the Closet of Doom!

In other news, we finally got the recordings and video from a gig we did over the 4th of July weekend with the band. The mp3 recordings may be found here, and we have the whole show up on our YouTube channel here. Video quality isn't exactly astounding unfortunately - I'm the blur playing bass on the right. Heh. For the most part I just play bass and do backing vocals, but I'm singing lead on "Ozark Mountain Racer". Fun times!

So what's next?

With the Eldar (more or less) behind me, it's time to consider what to work on next. I'm truly at an impasse as to what that may be so I figured I'd turn to you folks to find out what you'd like to see more of! I've put together a poll in the upper right that lays out the options from the (waaaaay too many) projects that languish in various states of incompletion in the Closet of Doom...

#1 - Imperial Guard. There's still plenty of work to be done on the Glorious 7th, numerous tanks and a handful of infantry. Of all the projects, this one is the nearest to completion.

#2 - Adeptus Mechanicus. There's always more work to be done on the Ad-Mech. There's several units of Skitarii that need to be built, as well as some fun tanks using the final pair of King Russ tanks that I have, and plenty of already-built stuff that needs to be painted.

#3 - Tzeentch Renegades. There's a burgeoning 40k Chaos army lurking on the shelves and in various states of assembly. While they'd be fun to do, they are predominantly blue and yellow, which I just got done doing a whole mess of with the Alaitoc gits.

#4 - Heresy-Era World Eaters. This is essentially not even an army, just a random assortment of units that need to be painted and sold. There's some cataphract terminators, an assault squad, some jetbikes... And that's about it. Would be simple to knock out, and would let me experiment on some new white techniques (I was never very happy with my previous method).

#5 - Orks. Lastly, there's darn near an entire Ork army left over from years and years ago, built and primered. including a Stompa with some FW upgrades. The only thing the army lacks is any sort of HQ choice, which would be easy enough to rectify. Downside: Batch painting ahoy.

What do you folks want to see? Please vote on the poll, or if you have other ideas please let me know in the comments!

Imperial Guard - Medusa and Pask's Vanquisher

The imperial guard is the runaway result on the poll, so I popped open the painting chart before delving into the Closet of Doom to see what there was to work on.

Not really all that much more to do with the guard. Well, at least not until they get their 6th ed. codex release, at which point I'm sure there's going to be several new additions to the army!

I decided I'd start by knocking out another couple tanks that have been languishing in a primered state for the better part of a year: The Medusa and the command tank for the burgeoning Vanquisher squadron, with my counts-as Pask and his infeasible banner.

I started off by finishing up the red sections, and started blocking in the yellow and metallic areas. After looking at the pics, I'm thinking about going back in and painting the hunter/killer missile on the Medusa in yellow to match the rest of the weapons.

A little more detailing work, finished up the yellow and started adding in the painted heraldry. Once they're painted and sealed, I'll be going back in to add some waterslide transfers as well.

Next up were the tracks, which got the usual dark flesh/leather brown drybrush to match the rest of the tanks. At this point they're about 85% done, a little more work remains before I can seal 'em and add the transfers. Once I have all the tanks in the army up to the same level of done-ness I'm planning on going over all of them and add some weathering effects using some of the sponge and wash techniques I'd experimented with on the Eldar. Looking forward to that!

In other news, the Eldar auctions I have going at the moment are going to be ending in just a few days. Check 'em out here if you're interested!

Imperial Guard - Pask's Vanquisher and Medusa painted

$

As they were 90% done as of the last post, it was a simple matter to finish off the Vanquisher and Medusa!

Pask got the lion's share of the work - the flag got a little more color and detail, as did his skin and uniform. It turns out I'm apparently out of white 'mordian' waterslides so I went with a name for the tank on the turret instead, taken from a sisters of battle transfer sheet.

Went back and added some more red trim to the Medusa and re-painted the HK missile in yellow to match the rest of the weapons. I do still need to sort out some crewmen for this tank, though - that's been bugging me. In a pinch I can use a pair of gunners from the Medusa Emplacement (which I haven't taken a photo of since re-basing it), after all they're used to firing one! Heh.

While I had the paints out, I did spend half an hour painting up the 'active camo' versions of the MERCs KemVar team. "Painting them" being synonymous with "applying about five colors to the bases", it took virtually no time at all.

I'm planning on playing a couple games of MERCS out at GenCon, and figured I had better finish up the team! My buddy Dave and I threw down a game this past weekend and he did a great write-up about it - Definitely worth checking out!

Imperial Guard - Medusa Emplacement rebased

$

Pressing on with the guard, and went back to one of the old models to start the touch-up process. One of the units that needed updating to the current scheme was the Medusa emplacement. That is primarily accomplished with re-basing it, taking it from the old concrete rubble style as seen in this old photo to the current grass and rock theme to match the rest of the army.

The Medusa is hands down my favorite artillery piece, and my favorite things about the emplaced version (in 5th edition at least), was that there was a rule that allowed immobile units to be deployed via deep strike. "Surprise! Medusa from the skies!" I've always wanted to create some parachute shrouds to add to the base, but I'm not sure that the rule still applies in 6th edition.

At this point however, the trooper's fatigues and the weapon's banding don't match the dark blue/black of the majority of the army, which I'm thinking of justifying as the medusa emplacement being from the 7th's A company, rather than D company which comprises the majority of my army and therefore have a slight variation on the color scheme. This is in no way a craven attempt to not have to repaint them. No sir. The Master of Ordnance and Bodyguard models I have (who are ostensibly from regimental command) wear the reversed colors with grey fatigues and red armor, so it all kind of works (if you squint)! This also raises the idea that when I'm done with D company, I can move on and start working on A, B and/or C Companies and explore some other color combos...

Just 5 days until GenCon! Woo-hoo!
