Inq28 - Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Helios

The new work schedule has really bit into my hobby time these days, but I managed to carve out a little time to work on another model for the Inq28 warbands. Today it's the head of the Ordo Hereticus warband, Inquisitor Helios.

Inquisitor Helios is a hard-line Puritan of the Ordo Hereticus, a man of firm and unswerving dedication to the Emperor who has spent a lifetime rooting out the foes of the Imperium both in the depths of the hive spires of the core worlds, as well as in the far-flung reaches of the galaxy. Wearing an ancient set of Terminator armour and bearing a combi-psicannon and force stave, Helios is not only a terrifying combatant but also a potent psyker who has used his powers to destroy innumerable cells of rogue warlocks and demagogues of chaos.

I've had the bits for this model banging around in the Closet of Doom for nearly 30 years, the body is from one of the first incarnations of the Grey Knights, while the arms are from the old terminator inquisitor (which had been used in another project ages ago). Felt good to get an old school mini finished up for the modern age!

Inq28 - Things start to get out of hand...

Anything worth doing, is worth OVERdoing, right? While I've had literally zero painting time over the last week, I did go through all the various shelves and boxes and pulled out a whole mess of minis that I've collected over the years. Mostly picked up for use in various Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader games, they're all perfect fodder for Inq28!

I think there's more than enough to divvy up into three warbands - Hereticus, Xenos and Malleus! Gotta figure out what models will go with whom, but it's already getting me thinking about backgrounds and history just looking over all the models!

Inq28 - Tau Mercenaries (all sorts of heresy!)

I'll admit right up front that I've never been a particular fan of the Tau - mostly that came down to the model range however, I quite like the fluff. I rather enjoy the Surprisingly Sinister Space Pope and his Ethereals, the whole caste system is interesting, and the fact that they embrace all the species they come across rather than just automatically exterminating them makes for a breath of fresh air in the grim darkness. (Heresy!) Ran across these alternate models on ebay a while back and thought they'd be fun to paint up, and subsequently thought "Hey, these'd be perfect mercenaries for a radical Ordo Xenos warband". I wasn't super happy with the initial skin tones so spent a little time touching them up and got some new pics taken:

"Big Shas O'Mal'y" along with an air caste tech and fire caste sniper joined forces with Inquisitor Travinski during an investigative mission into the incursion of Hive Fleet Kraken. The Tau were rescued from almost certain death at the claws of a Genestealer cult (side note, also thinking about doing up some villain warbands), and subsequently pledged their service to the Inquisitor, further cementing her status as a radical in the eyes of her peers. (Double heresy!)

A bit more cheesecake with these models, especially the sniper - Let's just say I had to take a few pics before I got one that's SFW. (Triple heresy!) Was fun to paint up some xenos filth though - had fun with the skintones and tried a number of different washes to try to approximate the 'typical' ochre Tau armor color. I have another few female Tau mercs coming to add to the group - they may end up spinning off into their own warband when all is said and done!

Apologies for the radio silence there, but I was taking the first honest-to-Emperor serious vacation I've had in four years! Ended up spending the last couple weeks in Italy doing some sightseeing and attending my friend's wedding - good times were had, as well as good food, good wine, and good friends! No hobby work has been done in that whole time what with my paints and models being on the other side of the planet, but a post's not a post without some pictures!

Based most of the trip out of the town of Salerno, where we stayed in a fantastic bed and breakfast place that blew away any hotel we could have found. The view off the patio was worth the trip all by itself!

Spent a couple days in Rome, and took about 400 pictures, but I'll just hit the highest of the highlights. Can't miss the Colosseum of course!

Spent about four hours in the Vatican (Interesting fact, approximately 2.3 Popes per square kilometer), and this art installation really caught my attention. It has a vaguely dark mechanicum vibe to it...

While the Vatican was fantastic, it was Saint Peter's Basilica that truly astounded me - it was absolutely jaw-dropping inside.

Later we popped down to the Amalfi coast where the wedding was to be held, and spent some time in the city admiring more of the phenomenal countryside.

The wedding itself was held in an old coastal fort, which sits above an exemplary restaurant and beach. You couldn't ask for a more picturesque location!

The wedding ceremony finished just as the sun was setting, and the view was spectacular. I'd honestly started to get pissed off at how relentlessly beautiful it was. Hah! Unfortunately it's now back to the grind at work, but I can start getting some hobby stuff done again too - lots of fun stuff on the horizon!

Fallout Hobbies transfers arrive!

...Well technically they arrived a week or so ago, but I just picked up all the on-hold mail from the post office yesterday. Heh. I'd pitched in on Ronnie Gamble's fantastic Kickstarter campaign to get Fallout Hobbies off the ground as a custom waterslide transfer and airbrush template company. I'm happy to say it succeeded and the rewards exceeded my expectations in every way!

I received a set of the Radioactive and Biohazard sets for use on some future project/terrain, a set of really cool-looking scrollwork, and some interesting scorch marks that I'm eager to try adding to a vehicle or building.

Turns out they're a little challenging to photograph, as most of what I'd ordered were white and the backing paper is a rather light grey. Bunch of Egyptian and occult themed transfers for the inevitable next Thousand Sons army (and a bit for the associated Spireguard).

Overall I was blown away by the quality of the prints and the attention to detail. His full time web store is up and running here, I highly recommend checking 'em out - he's got the capability to accept your custom printing requests as well as providing an ever-expanding catalog of pre-designed sheets, I know I'll be going back for more sheets soon!

With the sweet new transfers from Fallout Hobbies arriving, it galvanized me to work on a model to put 'em on! The centerpiece for the Spireguard army is going to be the Stormhammer I'd picked up at Gencon, and I managed to get the reds laid in over the last few days.

So far, so good! Next up will be all the silver metallics, after which I can start in on the detail panels in bone-white, and gold rivets.

...So many gold rivets. Hoo boy.

Heresy Era Imperial Army - Geno Five Two, the LVO plan unveiled!

So Real Life(tm) has been kicking my butt over the last couple weeks and I've gotten almost nothing of note done on the hobby front. On the plus side, now that I'm back from vacation I could finally order up some bits for the Geno Five-Two and they're starting to arrive! Unfortunately, so far it's heads and bases, with none of the middle bits to connect 'em. Argh!

That said, with two potential 40k travel destination events rapidly approaching I figured it was time to sit down and really figure out an army list. That'll also help me sort out what I need to buy and really stick to just the models needed for the events - gotta be a bit more frugal this time as the ol' hobby fund is relatively low at the moment. The LVO is coming up a the beginning of February, at 2500 points so I did some fiddling around and came up with the following - Auxilia with the "Gene Crafted" Provenance, backed up by a small allied force of Alpha Legion. The idea behind the force is that of Peto Soneka's "Dancers" company prior to their getting mauled at Tel Utan, and the Alpha Legion units that were also in-theatre at the time.

Ends up being 75ish Army troopers and support weapons, 31 Marines and a trio of battle tanks. Competitive? Probably not, but it's fluffy as heck and should be fun to play! It'll be amusing to see 'em get mauled in every game just like they do in the books, while the Alpha Legion doesn't show up until the very end when it's far to late to save them (due to my terrible reserve rolls). Hah!

I did fiddle around with the models I'd intended to use for Uxor Rukhsana Saiid and her attendants to get a feel for some basic color schemes. Rukhsana is mentioned wearing a black uniform and a grey stormcoat at one point in the novel so she works out pretty well. The other models are the female arcadians from Victoria Lamb, not going to be used in the army list but were done up mostly to test out the scheme. I'm going with some desert bases from Secret Weapon for the final project, I like the color achieved on these but will likely be going with a different static grass color (something more blonde/straw colored), as the green just doesn't do it for me.

Getting excited to actually come to grips with the project!

Just a quick hit today - Starting to get concerned about the package from Victoria Lamb with the lion's share of the bits for the Geno Five-Two as it's been almost three weeks from the shipping notification and still no package. Hrm. Pressed onward with the Stormhammer in the meantime!

Nothing spectacular, just got the base metals on the weapons and tracks, and started blocking in the various panels that will be getting the bone-white treatment. So far, so good!

Heresy Era Imperial Army - Geno Five-Two test models built!

I got home yesterday and found the long-awaited package from Victoria Lamb waiting for me! Unfortunately there was a bit of a mix-up and the lasrifles I'd ordered were missing from the box (though a quick email to VL sorted the issue), but there were enough bits to knock together a couple test figs to see how everything goes together.

So without further ado - Hetman Peto Soneka and Bashaw Lon! Everything went together like a dream, with the minor matter of the heads. The ones I'd ordered from Meridian Minis don't come with necks but a bit of greenstuff sorted that right out!

Rather pleased with 'em overall - looking forward to building more of 'em once the lasrifles show up! In other plans for the army I'm seeing a lot of "Dreadtober" posts, so I've dug out the Alpha Legion dread I'd picked up at GenCon and have it soaking in preparation for assembly!

Heresy Era Alpha Legion - Dreadtober Contemptor built

While it's not currently part of the army plan for the LVO, I picked up an Alpha Legion dread at GenCon earlier this year and with all the excellent Dreadtober posts going around, figured I'd use it as an impetus to do some work on it!

I have to say the Contemptor is one of my favorite kits to build - all of the articulation points mean you can really get some dynamic poses out of it, and so I went with a charging/running pose, as though it's blasting a unit with the plasma gun prior to tearing into 'em with the power claw. It was nice enough outside when I got home to primer it as well, and am hoping to get some paint on it this weekend. In a bit of a departure from the 'normal' Alpha Legion paint scheme, I'm going to be following the description from Legion and giving it the purple/silver scheme rather than the more commonly-accepted metallic blue/green. The trick is going to be finding an appropriate shade of purple so it doesn't just look like an Emperor's Children dread... Some testing will be required!

Heresy upon heresy - I managed to squeeze in a little painting time this weekend, and started laying in the purples and metals on the Contemptor for the Alpha Legion. As alluded to previously, I'm going with the description of the Alpha Legion armour from the book Legion, where it's mentioned a few times as being purple/indigo. This is also shown on the cover art, where it's definitely a more blueish-purple than that found on the Emperor's Children.

I tried a couple variations and came up with a reasonable approximation, I believe. I went with a more dark and oily metallic on the joints and undercarriage, and a blue-tinged silver for the trim.

The ol' color wheel suggests the complimentary colors are green (suitable for the legion symbology) and yellow/orange, which will be used on the eye lenses, power cables, etc. So far, so good!

Heresy Era Alpha Legion - Dreadtober Contemptor almost done!

Wonder upon wonders I had a half day on Wednesday and got a little hobby time in! Thought I'd crack on with the Contemptor and more or less finished it off to the 'factory floor' stage. Touched up the symbols and silver, and added a touch of orange and gold for spot colors. It's been a little too rainy to risk trying to seal it however, so any further weathering and waterslide transfers will have to wait until it dries out a bit!

Still experimenting with the bases - In Legion the desert sands of Nurth are described as being red-hued however I didn't want to go full Mars red with it (for fear of it being too cartoony against the purple of the models), so a more subdued reddish brown it is! Starting with Vallejo Dark Flesh as a base coat on the dirt, it was then drybrushed with Earth then washed with the ol' Devlan Mud analog (Strong Tone Ink from Army Painter). To give it some variety but still be desert-y, some of the more exposed chunks of rock get the sandstone treatment starting with a base coat of Earth, followed by successive drybrush passes with Khaki and Bone White. It too was then given the Devlan Mud wash. To be truthful the wash stage mostly consisted of using the "slop it on the whole darn base, you cheating hack" method. Hah! Since I ordinarily paint the rims of my bases in Dark Flesh, I thought it might be refreshing to switch it up on these models and go with a lighter rim painted in Earth to set off against the darker terrain. It's workable, but I'm not 100% sold on it quite yet.

All that remains is a little flock to give it some life and a sense of scale! I didn't like my usual green mix when I used it on the earlier test models, so this afternoon  I ordered up three different tins in varying tones, with the intent of creating a combo mix - The arid straw color will form the backbone of the mix, with just a couple tablespoons of the other two just to give it a few blades of color here and there and stop it from being quite so monochromatic.

While I was faffing about waiting for various washes to dry on the Contemptor, I started assembling the first of two squads of the Dancers company of the Geno Five-two. I'd ordered up a whole mess of separate 'universal rolled sleeve' arms and a mess of lasrifles, but to my horror when I was looking back over the catalog I noted that Victoria Lamb does sprues of rolled sleeve arms with integral lasrifles identical to what I'd ordered and would undoubtedly save me hours of hobby frustration. Argh! One sheepish follow-on order later... No worries though, the universal arms will come in handy to build a couple characterful models, vexillaries, vox operators and the like!

Inq28 - Qui Medicus?

Quick hit today, as I'm waiting for the next bits to arrive for the Geno-Five Two.

The Inq28 side project I've been fooling around with are mostly minis I'd intended for use in RPG sessions, and I'm pleased to say there's plans afoot for me to run another Rogue Trader campaign where those minis will come in handy! That's got me looking back over the notes and remembered I'd intended to include an antagonist/comedy relief character in the form of Ordo Chronos Inquisitor Iohannes Claudius Camillus Fransiscus Van Varenberg. The Ordo Chronos concerns itself with instances of Temporal Heresy, an issue with which the players will be finding themselves in a couple different ways throughout the course of the campaign, and Inquisitor Van Varenburg will be a recurring antagonist (not a villain per se, but he's not a good man to cross).

Among all of the fragmented and contradictory records of the Ordo Chronos, Inquisitor Van Varenberg is noted to generally arrive via his Teleporting Armoured Redaction Delivery and Investigation Shell... Hah!

Squeaking in just under the deadline, the static grass arrived and there was a break in the chilly weather, so I was able to get the Contemptor flocked and sealed!

Pretty happy with the 'desert scrub' mix on the static grass - might add a bit more of the green to it, but I like the predominantly dried grass tone. With the recent pics starting to make the rounds of the upcoming Heresy plastics, I'm cautiously optimistic about being able to use the Mk.IV marines as a basis for the troops, and the plastic cataphractii as conversion fodder for the Lernaean terminators. Much as I love FW's modes, buying the basic troops in resin rapidly becomes ruinously expensive. If I can spring for some unit upgrade kits and mix and match with the plastics I'll be a happy camper! Next month should be interesting!

Heresy Era Imperial Army - Geno Five-Two Fire Support Squad begins

Sadly Real Life(tm) continues to eat up the majority of my time recently, but I did get a big box o' joy from Victoria Lamb Miniatures on Friday which was a nice way to end an otherwise rather irritating week! The box included the remaining legs and torsos for the Geno Five-Two infantry squads, a bunch of arms and weapons (that will be going into the spares bucket now that I have the integrated arms/weapon sprues on the way), as well as all the bits to make up the heavy weapons for the Fire Support Squads. I was really impressed with the kits, super crisp castings and the ones I've built thus far have gone together like a dream!

I did manage to squeeze in enough hobby time over the weekend to get the bits washed and dried, and put together the first five of the heavy weapon carriages. When all is said and done there will be five autocannons and five lascannons, which should give the army a little extra punch. I'm considering how I want to do the crew - considering putting one member on the 60mm base with the gun, and putting the second man on a separate base to facilitate wound tracking, or possibly just having both members be separate - I'm finding the carriage takes up a surprising amount of room on the base and I'm afraid packing both crewmen on will make them too busy (not to mention rather hard to paint).

Heresy Era Imperial Army - first Geno Five-Two squad built!

Over the last few days the final bits have arrived and I was able to get the first 20-man squad of the Geno Five-Two Dancers Company built. I thought I'd write a bit about my miniature build/posing philosophy, as folks sometimes remark on the natural/dynamic poses I get with the miniatures, and that comes down to a couple key concepts I utilize when putting 'em together.

Starting off, you gotta stick the legs down to the base, no crazy surprise there. After that I'll generally attach the torsos to the models, generally alternating between having them 'straight on' with the hips, canted around to the right about 45 degrees or canted around to the left about 45 degrees. In general real life movement, one's torso doesn't usually twist much farther than this, and when the models are turned much farther than that, the miniature starts to look a bit 'off'. Once the torsos are firmly attached, I'll note the position of the feet, and imagine an angle drawn between the points of the toes (#2 above) as that will act as a bit of a reference guide for the next steps.

On many models carrying a rifle, it's held across the chest in a fairly predictable position, and the torso twist applied in the earlier step will inform where the muzzle of the weapon ends up pointing. Where possible I try to lean towards torso/weapon positions such that the muzzle falls within the angle described by the feet in the previous step (#1 and 2 above), as that approximates a braced firing position. Models whose torso is canted around to the left will naturally have the muzzle of the weapon fall outside the angle of the feet (#3 above), but that's okay as we'll discuss in a moment. In order to get a model to point a rifle held across the chest all the way around to the right, the model's torso would have had to been twisted far beyond the 45 degree mark and would look anatomically inaccurate (so generally I don't ever end up with any built models that would look that way), but there are character models brandishing one-handed weapons that may 'break the rules'. In those cases, I try not to have the weapon pointing at a more than 90 degree angle from the line drawn through the opposing foot (#4), as that would mean the model would essentially be aiming behind it which can look rather awkward.

The last step is the head, positioning of which is very important. The main rule I follow here is that the angle of the feet is more important than the position of the weapon when deciding which way to point the head. Where the muzzle of the weapon weapon lies within the angle of the feet, I tend to have the model's head sighting down the weapon, as that results in a natural-looking firing position (#1 and 2 above). When the muzzle of the weapon points outside the angle of the feet, the head should STILL face somewhere within the angle of the feet (#3 above), as that results in a model that appears to be advancing with his weapon held at the ready prior to assuming a firing stance. The exception applies for characters with one-handed weapons, and in those cases the head may be canted a little further around to sight down the outstretched barrel, but I stick with the 90 degree angle from the opposing foot rule here as well.

Bashaws Lon and Shah here are examples of the one-hander rules. In these cases I dry-fit the arms onto the torsos first before gluing the torsos to the legs, to ensure that the weapons positioning wouldn't violate 'the rules'. Lon's sword and pistol ended up lining up nicely with his feet, and as his sword is the obvious direction of interest, his head was aligned to sight down the blade. Shah on the other hand sights down the barrel of his pistol which is just shy of a 90 degree angle from the torso. Canting the torso around such that the weapon falls within the angle of the advancing feet meant that it would have violated the 45 degree twist rule, so that means instead his head must point outside the angle of the feet in order to align with the pistol, but by keeping it to within the 90 degree angle from his right foot it still looks like a natural pose as no single element of the body is twisted around farther than would be natural.

Not sure if that explanation makes a lot of sense, but happy to answer any questions about the method!

So it turns out I was overestimating exactly how much space the gunners would take up on the bases for the autocannon teams, once I'd gotten the crew all built I started experimenting with positioning and for the most part was able to fit two per base in such a way that they make interesting vignettes and should still be easy to paint.

Rather pleased with how they've turned out so far and quite looking forward to getting some paint on both these and the first infantry squad. Unfortunately it's been rather chilly of late and I've not had much luck finding a time to get them primered. Argh!

Shuffling the army list around a bit to account for the upcoming heresy plastics (the Alpha Legion allies may be taking up a bit more of their share of the 2500 point list I'm currently building towards), so the lascannon team bits have gone into the Closet of Doom for use with the Prospero Spireguard army that lies in wait for the Thousand Sons to rise again...

...And with the upcoming plastics, they may very well do so sooner rather than later!

Heresy Era Alpha Legion - Tactical Squad built

All work and no play makes Mord a dull boy, and it's been plenty dull of late. On the up side, there was a box o' joy which arrived Friday evening and I finally got my hands on the new Betrayal at Calth box set. Others have and will do more in-depth critiques and content listings, but suffice it to say that I'm overjoyed with the miniatures, and immediately got stuck in with the cornerstone of any self-respecting Heresy army and put together a 20-man Tactical Squad.

The Alpha Legion upgrade kits I'd picked up from FW worked a treat, and in order to keep the majority of the models fairly 'vanilla' (which I think suits the Alpha's modus operandi) only the sergeants really got blinged out. Thus, the Sergeant is easily shown to be wearing artificer armour with the fancy torso and helmet to accompany the Alpha Legion shoulder pads the rest of the battle brothers wear. So far so good, and I have to say that for basic rank-and-file troopers these plastics are absolutely perfect for the job! Definitely planning to pick up another couple boxes after the holidays and get the Thousand Sons going again...

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Stateside readers! For the rest, I hope you will have a pleasant Thursday this week regardless. Cheers, everyone!

Heresy Era Alpha Legion - Lernaean Terminator squad built

Really enjoying building the models from the Betrayal at Calth box set. While the power armoured marines were a treat, the real star of the set for me has got to be the plastic Cataphractii. I'd planned on using them to whip up a unit of Lernaean terminators, so with a quick order to FW for the Volkite chargers and a bit of work with an x-acto knife we're good to go!

The set comes with tons of weapon options, but following the lacklustre performance of my last Thousand Sons terminators armed with power weapons, I knew from the outset that this unit would have plenty of power fists and chainfists (hands down my favorite melee weapon in the 40k universe). After this are some Headhunters and a scout squad left to build, but I realized I didn't order enough bases - gotta wait for the next package from Secret Weapon to arrive. Curses!

Heresy Era Alpha Legion - Headhunters and Efrit Stealth Squad built

The flurry of building continues apace, and I've managed to finish building all of the Alpha Legion allies to accompany the Geno Five-Two. First up, the Efrit Stealth Squad:

Pretty much your bog-standard recon marines, with an Alpha Legion upgrade head for the sergeant. Nothing to write home about and not necessarily the best choice on an effectiveness-to-points ratio, but rather fluffy to have, as the unit is explicitly mentioned in the book!

Next up are the Headhunters, the second of the Alpha Legion's special units (alongside the Lernaeans). With banestrike rounds and Preferred Enemy (Infantry), they're really designed to gun down their fellow marines, and they can take a heavy bolter with a suspenson web for a little extra dakka. Wanted to bling them up a bit more than the basic marines, so they all got the Alpha Legion upgrade heads, and I added a scope to each of the bolters to help 'em stand out as having some specialist equipment.

Last but not least, I banged together the two characters from the box set. The terminator will be used to represent Sheed Ranko, the ostensible leader of the force. No real plans to field the chaplain at the moment, and I'm thinking I may clip the crozius off of him and replace it with some alternate weapon - perhaps another pistol and make him into a Moritat, or a paragon blade for use as a power-armoured Praetor.

It was nice enough out yesterday to get some models primered, so with the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend I'm hoping to get some paint on some of 'em!
