Heresy Era Dark Angels - Army ready for NOVA!

$

As of the last post, the heresy era Dark Angels are essentially as done as they are going to get, and everything required for use at NOVA coming up at the end of August is ready to roll! I rather liked how the recent pics with the white background turned out, so figured I'd take the opportunity to reshoot the rest of the force similarly! Already droned on enough about them in previous posts, so we'll let the pictures flow:

HEAVY SUPPORT

A big ol' box of joy arrived from Battlefoam yesterday - took advantage of the 4th of July sale and re-upped my selection of pluckfoam trays. Now to fix the little niggling details that taking/reviewing/posting these pics have shown me (ain't that always the way?) and get 'em packed up for NOVA!

Necromunda - Shipping container shops built!

Saw a rather cool use for the GW shipping containers recently and knew I had to follow suit - Had a set lurking in the Closet of Doom so on a somewhat rainy afternoon I set to chopping, drilling and gluing my fingers together to make a few hopefully interesting pieces of scatter terrain for Necromunda!

First up, welcome to The Gun Show! This is a rough approximation of what I'd seen elsewhere online and had to emulate - Took a little doing to drill and cut out the 'windows' on the side, and also carved out the hatches on the tops to let a little extra light in. Still looking for a salesman model to stand behind the counter, but pretty jazzed with how it turned out!

As I then had two more containers to work with, I figured a couple more shops would be in order! Next up is a little general store, Don's Downhive Deals, with Dealin' Don excitedly showcasing an Isotopic Fuel Rod for the enterprising adventurer aiming to set up camp in the Underhive!

Finally, as the Underhive is a dangerous place, a little Emergency Services is in order! Gangers have to have a place to go to get their bionics after all, and Doc Grainger and his orderly Mister Snips are always happy for the business...

Rather fun to build and should add a little more flavor to the battlefield once I get 'em painted up!

Hail means a sale!

Been an interesting couple weeks meteorologically speaking, with a pair of pretty serious hailstorms causing some non-trivial damage to the roofs and cars in my neighborhood, and my place was no exception. Means it was time to have a rummage through the Closet of Doom to see what sorts of things I can unearth to help defray the upcoming costs!

Putting the Sons of Horus up as one big army to begin with, and if there are no bites it'll likely get chunked up into lots. There's also some old Inquisitor 54mm stuff, a few long OOP 40k and Mordheim models that I never really got around to completing (cough 15-20 years ago cough), and a Tzeentch Renegades warband that's also been in progress for more years than I care to count.

Couple pics of things going up:

More to come as I continue to spelunk through the CoD!

Necromunda - Shipping Container Shops Complete!

Got some brush time in recently and was excited to finish up the container shops for the Necromunda board! Sadly, after painting the interiors, I dry fit them together and in doing the painting and washing of the exteriors they essentially glued themselves shut. Doh!

First up, The Gun Show! Found a Chronoscope miniature with a wrench and a power fist which I thought worked well for the salesman, and am quite happy with the technicolor weaponry - Suitable for the neo-punk nature of the Underhive!

Next up is Don's Downhive Deals - Dealin' Don ended up looking pretty manic, which I thought worked well! "DO YOU NEED ISOTROPIC FUEL RODS? DEALIN' DON'S GOT ISOTROPIC FUEL RODS! ...AND A 50 GALLON DRUM OF RECAFF! ...AND I'M ON MY THIRTIETH CUP!"

Finally, Doc Granger's Emergency Services. Really happy with the interior of this one, but less happy with my sloppy brushwork on the sign. I think I'm going to re-white over the text and draw it in with Micron Pens instead to give it a bit more clean look. The sloppy brushwork works for the other two as hand-painted signs but I think the doc box could stand a bit more 'professional' lettering...

All in all I am really happy with how they turned out, and am looking forward to getting them on the table!

Necromunda - Kal Jerico painted!

Just a quick hit this evening - With basically all of my big projects either complete or in varying states of sale (link to auctions), I decided to take a little time and start working through my backlog of Necromunda miniatures, including all the various Forge World hired guns that have been released so far, and a few throwback models from the mists of time!

I went ahead and got the skin tones down on all ten models but then realized they weren't suitable for batch painting as they're all individuals with varying paint schemes, and to be honest they deserve a little more TLC than my usual "just crank 'em out" methods. So I figured I'd lead off with quite possibly my favorite GW model of all time, Kal Jerico! Stuck closely to the 'official' paint scheme, and pretty jazzed with how he turned out. Next up, his poxy partner Scabbs!

Necromunda - Scabs painted!

Can't have Kal Jerico without his trusty (and slightly smelly) sidekick Scabs, now can you?

Went a little brighter with his color scheme, and went with a variant of the official art that seemed to contrast well with the colors on Kal. Blue and yellow are always great colors to put together!

The dynamic duo ready to make a fortune in the underhive with their derring-do! I'm really hoping that we'll see GW come out with updated official rules for them at some point!

Next up is another blast from the past, Mad Donna Ulanti, which is a model that hasn't aged nearly as gracefully as these two...

Necromunda - Mad Donna Ulanti painted!

Another quick hit today - As a significant change of pace for me, I've just been working on one model at a time, and it's been pretty fun! Definitely requires a little adjustment, I'm so used to doing 15-20 at a time that having to wait for paint and washes to dry on a miniature between passes is something I rarely have to do!

In any case, next up on the painting desk was another blast from the past - D'onne Astride Ge'Sylvanus of the House of Ulanti, often shortened to D'onne Ulanti and better known as "Mad" Donna! Having just re-read "Survival Instinct" recently I rather enjoyed painting up the miniature, though it's definitely a product of its time and the sculpt hasn't aged well comparatively speaking.

I had given some thought to replacing the chainsword and plasma pistol with a modern equivalent, but in the end felt the charm of the old school model would be compromised by doing so. Once again I stuck close to the 'official' paint scheme, with plenty of leopard print, black and white leggings and bright pink hair!

All in all a very fun model to paint again after nearly twenty years, and I'm somewhat glad that my ham-fisted initial attempt to paint the model from way back when has been lost to mists of time. It was a travesty! :D

Next up I'm diving in to the new Forge World hired guns, really looking forward to it!

Necromunda - Mad Dog Mono painted!

The hits just keep on coming! Been getting into the groove and knocking out a new necromunda model every couple days, and it's been a lot of fun!

Today's model is Mad Dog Mono, one of the numerous hired guns that FW has come out with and the one that I most looked forward to getting some paint on from the initial trio. I really dig the techo-ragpicker look, and think he'll fit in well with the upcoming House Cawdor gang (I'm scheming on using this blue/yellow/brass scheme on them as well).

All in all I'm pretty jazzed with how they're coming along, four down and six to go!

Necromunda - Grub Targeson painted!

Tick tock, it's Necromunda-o-clock! Definitely in the rhythm now, and the dudes are marching across the painting desk in a steady flow. Finished up the Chump with the Hump last night, the hive scum Grub Targeson:

Grub isn't quite as unusual a sculpt as Mad Dog Mono or Yolanda Skorn (still upcoming), but he has a ton of personality nonetheless. Fairly basic and workmanlike loadout with the shotgun and knife, he may not look like much but can put the hurt on anyone who strays too close!

I do like his background in the Gang War book, at one point he noticed a bump show up on his shoulder which over time swelled and grew into an unpleasant hump. While these sorts of unfortunate growths are endemic in the rad- and chem-filled atmosphere of Necromunda, when the hump started whispering secrets to him, Grub was forced to flee into the underhive to avoid being purged as a mutant and heretic. Adds a little fun flavor to the character!

Next up on deck is the new version of one of my perennial necromunda characters, the pompous Guilder Count DeMonay!

Terrain - Ministorum Temple begins!

After working on a fair few individual models, I had the urge to switch scales for a bit and do something big! When Killteam was announced I was rather interested in the new buildings that came with it, and though I ultimately decided against buying the starter box I couldn't help but order up a couple boxes of just the terrain!

I knew that I wanted to combine the Basilicanum and Sanctus kits into one big Ministorum Temple and though I was initially miffed that the wall heights were different from the earlier City of Death buildings, I have to admit that I'm really impressed with the kits one I got my hands on 'em!

I figured that for utility and storage that I'd do it up in multiple sections that fit together into one cohesive building, but could also be used separately and as such it breaks apart into 3 standard "ruined corner" sections, and one little sniper perch.

I started the painting process via a bunch of rattle-can primers, beginning with an all-over black primer than progressively lighter browns and tans using the zenithal method to lay in the initial shading. Will have to break out the big brushes soon and start laying in all the detail!

Necromunda - Yolanda Skorn painted, Gang Planks and NOVA Charity Raffles!

Another quick hit today - The one-off mini painting has been quite fun, and after the brief sidetrack on the buildings I shoved another of the hired guns in front of the Painting Servitor and fired it up.

Today's scum is the bounty hunter Yolanda Skorn, who was savagely wounded in the face and now wears a veil to hide her disfigurement. Though her prey is occasionally granted a glimpse of her rictus grin before their termination!

Really dig this model, and think the FW sculptors struck a good balance of femininity without being hypersexualized. Really enjoyed painting her and stuck pretty close to the 'canon' paint scheme. Kept up with the leopard print to help tie her together with the other Eschers I've done.

In other news I recently saw Promethium Forge's new "Gang Plank" organizers and had to order up a couple. Once they arrive I'll do up a little review, but if you're interested in Necromunda it seems like a handy little organizer for gaming!

In other, other news the deadline is approaching on the NOVA Open Charitable Foundation raffles, where among other fantastic armies and single models, you can also enter to win a spectacular Warlord Titan, by the inestimable John Steining. And we're not talking about one of the new Adeptus Titanicus models, we're talking a full on resin monster from FW! Check out the raffles here!

Necromunda - House Orlock Gang, Slate Merdena and Macula painted!

$

The Necromunda train rumbles on, with a foray into House Orlock territory! As part of the pile of hired guns was the Orlock-specific character Slate Merdena and his cyber-mastiff Macula, and I figured I may as well do up the nucleus of the associated Orlock gang that has been lurking on the shelf for several months.

Tried to do a Rottweiler scheme on Macula with a lighter brown underbelly and muzzle, but it's all washed out in the photos. Probably ought to go one tone lighter and re-shoot 'em... Slate is a beast as well with a plasma pistol and a thunder hammer, ready to squish the enemies of the House!

Went with a dirty, greasy biker look with the gangers, with blue jeans, grubby white t-shirts and oily metal armor. The loin cloths got a hit of yellow to give 'em a little pop. I've been picking up two boxes of gangs for each house, but have held off on building the second ten until I can get my hands on some of the FW weapon upgrade kits.

Speaking of Forge World, I'd pulled the trigger on some bits and kits for the next Heresy project this past weekend which proved to be rather timely following the news about the 20+% price hike across the board as they moved to local currency stateside. Glad I did as the order would have cost me and additional $120 for no good reason. I can understand their desire to not be tied to the occasionally volatile exchange rate, but a 20% rise seems egregious. Definitely going to be far more circumspect about what I order from FW going forward, and start relying more on third-party bits providers like Shapeways, Anvil Industries, Victoria Lamb, etc...

Pictures from an Exhibition - NOVA Open 2018 Day One and Two!

Greetings folks! It's been a whirlwind recently, with the event I look forward to most happening over the past week - The NOVA Open! I took a mess of pics, so buckle up as we dive in to a long weekend of Heresy goodness!

Day One

Got into D.C. on Wednesday late afternoon and got checked into the hotel. The NOVA Open is held at the Crystal City Hyatt which is a rather nice location, quite near Reagan airport. The rooms appeared to have been remodeled somewhat from last year, and were spacious and comfortable, always a good thing!

Charity Armies

Swung down to the event space to pick up my back and events packets and snapped some shots of all the sweet charity armies on display. Had to lay some money down for a couple of the raffles as well!

Ran into a number of old blogger buddies and Heresy battle brothers, and ended up calling it a reasonably early evening as the next few days were going to be packed!

Day Two

Escalation Armies

Thursday morning we rallied down in the event space where the Heresy campaign was being run and folks were laying out their armies - So much goodness on display, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves!

These are just a sampling of the awesome armies, sadly my usual 2 of every 3 pictures taken being garbage applied. I really need to bring a monopod to the events! They asked everyone who brought a primarch to line them all up, and we almost had the full set - Just missed out on Magnus and Lorgar if memory serves.

Escalation Game One

The first day's games were designed such that we had the option of playing 2000, 2500 or 3000 point games. I knew I wanted to do some big games and get all the boys on the table at once (the later games in the weekend were all 1500 points or less), so once all the table assignments were set, we dived right in! They allowed us to call out any "grudge matches" we wanted to play against specific opponents, and the always-awesome Todd Sherman from Sincain40k and I got down to it!

I'm not going to do blow-by-blow battle reports for each game as the pictures speak for themselves. Suffice it to say, Todd's Raven Guard utterly smashed the Dark Angels which was to be expected - His army is dynamite! Gorgeous games with beautiful armies run by great opponents on awesome tables, so even losing the game was a great experience!

Escalation Game Two

The second grudge match of the day was against the inestimable Nate Taylor and his absolutely stunning White Scars. The game was a massive see-saw, with the Dark Angels causing massive casualties on the first few turns...

..But the reinforcements led by the Khan himself rapidly turned the tide and the Dark Angels were driven from the field in disarray (a common theme to the weekend, it turns out)! Another completely fantastic game full of laughs, cheers and jeers!

There were a number of awesome little goodies handed out by the event team, including this rather on-the-nose dig at the semi-recent Space Wolf upgrade kit release. Too funny!

Being a little wiped out from a pair of back-to-back 3000 point games, and not really having enough time to complete a third game in the slot the Dark Angels vowed to return the next day for vengeance!

Next up, Day three events and mayhem!

Pictures from an Exhibition - NOVA 2018 day three!

On to the picture dump for day three - Buckle up, the Heresy Train has no brakes!

The unfolding campaign on Friday had the Loyalists and Traitors battling it out on the surface of the planet, as well as undertaking smaller recon and skirmishing forces into the undersprawl of the planet. The Calibanites naturally chose to skulk in the shadows, and the Zone Mortalis began!

Game one saw the Dark Angels facing off against the Solar Auxilia captained by a good buddy Josh Bruder. He is an excellent opponent and his armies are not only staggeringly effective, they're also gorgeous! The Calibanites didn't have enough bullets to stop the tidal wave of humans, and it was only due to a massive detonation overhead that they managed to sneak away in the confusion.

In a tremendous example of tying the games together narratively, Whenever a superheavy vehicle detonated on the Excruciatus tables, a catastrophic event took place on the ZM tables. In this case, a save vs. strength or die for every model on the table. While the posthuman warriors lost a few brethren to the falls, the collapse absolutely devastated the Solar Auxila, allowing for the Calibanites to escape.

I didn't get many pics of the Excruciatus games (as they were running concurrently with the ZM games), but there was some serious devastation going on!

Game two had the filthy Calibanite traitors face off against their Terran brethren, on an absolutely beautiful FW Zone Mortalis board. Due to a misunderstanding of the mission however, my opponent and I were rolling on the catastrophic damage table every turn, and couldn't stop rolling 11's and 12's. As such both our armies were essentially destroyed before we even made contact. After the fact we realized our mistake, but it was such a funny game with both sides fleeing for their lives that we decided to keep the result in play. After all, it couldn't possibly have been all a ploy and the two Dark Angels forces were actually in cahoots, could it? It absolutely could!

Game two featured another Dark Angels vs. Dark Angels battle. Turns out the loyalists found out about my traitor Calibanites and threw down the gauntlet! Another bloodbath ensued, with the loyalists eking out a close victory. The Lost Lions retreated in ignominy going 0-3 for the day, but all three games were an absolute blast (in two games, quite literally)!

After the games, I swung by the Crystal Palette display cabinets and goggled at the talent on display! Sadly my camera didn't take great pictures through the glass cases and these are only a bare sampling of the artistry on display. Inspiring stuff!

Rounded out the evening with a nice dinner with Dave Taylor and some of his friends, and then met up with some hobby giants for martinis. Some may say too many martinis were had that evening, based on the look of some of the folks the following morning. For me, the third martini was probably a mistake. The fourth and fifth were fine, it was the third one that was a problem... Hah!

Next up, the final day of the event and a little wrap-up!

Heresy Era Word Bearers - Zardu Layak and the Gal Vorbak painted!

$

Was down with a massive ear infection a week and a half ago which meant there was a surprising amount of hobbying being done (mostly due to the insomnia from the pain). The newest Heresy project rears its ugly head, in the form of...

The Word Bearers! Over the years I've done the most loyal of loyalists, and several misunderstood traitor legions, but figured it was time to do the full-on moustache-twirling-evil guys!

While I will undoubtedly get around to painting Erebus and Kor Phaeron, my initial intent was to have a force led by Zardu Layak and his Blade Slaves, as I was really taken by the models. More or less followed the 'standard' paint scheme for them, with Zardu wearing the old greys, while his possessed bodyguards wear the crimson and silver livery of the late-heresy legion.

The models that really got me into the project in the first place also marched across the painting desk over the last week - The Gal Vorbak are just extremely creepy models, and are really what the possessed marines ought to look like! I'm tempted to do a second five and try some conversions and kitbashing (so it's not just two of each guy). Great fun to paint!

The intention is to do a force that was present on Calth, and as such I knew I wanted to do some faux-marble bases as befitting of the Ultramar worlds. Turns out Secret Weapon does a near-perfect set of bases for just such a theme! I added a little talus to them to rough 'em up a little (they're 'pristine' out of the package) and spent a fair bit of time trying out various techniques until I settled on one that I liked and could reproduce reasonably consistently.

Of course, can't have a new project on the trot without a new painting chart, now can we? Working on the Ashen Circle next, pics to follow soon!

Heresy Era Word Bearers - Ashen Circle painting begins!

Just a quick hit this morning, pressing on with the Word Bearers and the Ashen Circle are next up on deck!

Painting them separate from the bases and backpacks is a new thing for me, still working out what works for me. Originally I had them on paint sticks akin to what I used to do with Napoleonics, but they proved too unwieldy at this scale. So the long pins were repurposed as handles, and I'm using a foam block to hold them upright as I work through the group. Got the reds and pewters down, on to all the fiddly detail work!

Heresy Era Word Bearers - Ashen Circle Painted!

I was having a good time painting up the Ashen Circe, and pressed on to the finish line with 'em over the last day and a half!

From a pose perspective they're a little odd - I definitely understand what the sculptors were going for with the models leaping/touching down, but from certain angles they tend to look like they're pirouetting. With a single toe or heel touch point on each model, they were all given nice long pins up into the legs and deep into the bases to hopefully keep them in place.

Can't be one of my projects without getting my signature blue on 'em somewhere. Hah! Still, blue and red are good contrasting colors.

Part of the intent was to put some shredded/charred papers on the bases of the Ashen Circle (among other models) so I went out on the interwebs and pulled down some arcane script pages and shrunk them down to try and make something I could print out. This first pass ended up being a little large for my needs and shrinking them further made them more or less illegible smears on my printer, but they may be useful to attach to vehicles and the like as pages from the Book of Lorgar!

So far so good! ...Or should I say, so far so evil?

Heresy Era Word Bearers - Argel Tal bits accumulation begins!

$

0
After re-reading The First Heretic and Betrayer for the 4th and 5th times, respectively, it was more or less a foregone conclusion that I'm going to have to build an Argel Tal model for my burgeoning Word Bearers force. ...Especially since there are no rules for him and barely any way of representing him on the tabletop, so the whole project totally wouldn't be a huge waste of time, money and effort. Nope, not at all!

I'm attempting to coerce a friend of mine into doing some World Eaters and come up with a "battle brothers on Armatura" themed team force for Adepticon/NOVA next year, though I might break down and do some World Eaters myself next anyway. Love this piece of art, if anyone knows the original artist please let me know, my web searches have been inconclusive. Whomever it was, they did a fantastic job!

My plan is to make and Argel Tal model where his daemonic aspect is at the fore (and really, why would you not?) so figured this Gal Vorbak model would work well as the basis for the conversion. I may update the head if I can find a viable replacement, but if not I do think it works pretty well as-is.

For the left arm, I'm planning on utilizing the arm on the far right of this picture, one of my favorite bits off the Possessed sprue. Generally used as a stand-in powerfist for normal-sized troopers, it ought to make a decently-scaled 'regular hand' for Argel Tal. Some of the remaining bits may find themselves scattered throughout the rest of the force...

Great pains are taken to note Argel Tal's wings, which as the former Captain of the 7th Assault Company is only fitting. I didn't want to go super massive with them with something like Daemon Prince or Hive Tyrant wings, but they needed to be imposing. Made a roll of the dice and ordered up some Vargheist wings, which appear to be a good medium-sized wing set. We'll see once I have them in-hand, I suppose!

Of course weapons are a consideration as well - Argel Tal is described as carrying a pair of Custodes guardian weapons, a spear and sword which he swaps between in combat depending on the circumstances. Scaling being a consideration, I went with some Allarus Terminator arms figuring they'd be slightly beefier than their power-armored counterparts, and suitable for the bulk of the Gal Vorbak model he'll be based on.

Finally, I was a little stymied by what to use for his sword, as I really didn't like the look of the slightly stubby Sentinel Blades from the Custodian Guard kit, but eventually stumbled upon the swords from the Vertus Praetors kit, a good size and sheathed as well, so I can have him wielding the spear and have the sword sheathed across his back as described in the book. On the up side, there's multiple spears and swords, so I may be able to build a version of Argel Tal in his 'regular' form as well and have some continuity on the look!

Of course, all the bits are coming in from the four corners of the globe so it may be some time before my fevered scheme comes to fruition, but I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in!

Dreadtober 2018!

It's almost that time of year again, when monstrous mechanical machines make much mayhem! That's right, it's time for...

I'll be helping out the inestimable Todd Sherman from Sincain40k in helping collate all the entries for this year's celebration of all things stompy! Head on over to dreadtober.blogspot.com and sign up - We'll be collection folks pictures and showing off all the awesome stuff you folks come up with over the month of October. It's not limited to just Dreadnoughts, of course - any big stompy machine is welcome! In point of fact, I don't personally have any Dreads in any of my current projects, so will instead be working on a group of Armigers that have been languishing on the painting desk for months. I always like these kinds of events as a goad to get some long-overdue project into (and subsequently off of) the painting queue!

It's the most Dread-full time of the year! Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

Heresy Era Word Bearers - Assault Squad Built!

Just a quick hit today on the Heresy front, before setting them aside for a while and diving in to my Dreadtober project. I wanted to add an assault squad to the Word Bearers force, but with the recent price rise the big resin assault squad just got crazy expensive. I figured that as I had a plethora of Mk.IV plastics, I could likely put together something a little more frugally. After trawling through eBay and Pop Goes The Monkey's offerings on Shapeways for appropriate bits, I more or less succeeded!

Though the legs on the plastic Mk.IVs are fairly static (not a lot of running poses), with the assault marine arms they still look pretty dynamic. I really dig the PGtM jump packs as well, though they're a little blown out in the pics. Quite looking forward to getting some paint on 'em, but that's going to have to wait, for now it's time to paint GIANT STOMPY MACHINES!
