Heresy Era Iron Hands - So it begins...

A big ol' package showed up on my doorstep this afternoon - the first Box O' Joy has arrived!

I love the smell of fresh resin in the morning. Smells like... Victory!

Got everything laid out and verified that it's all present and accounted for - pulled out the two Proteus Land Raiders and have them in the soak as well. Hope to get them put together tomorrow night and jump in on the painting this weekend!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Proteus Land Raiders built

After a nice soak and scrub, I managed to get the pair of Proteuseses built! I was reasonably pleased with how the kits went together. I built one to completion first to see how it worked and beyond a reasonable amount of hot-water bending I found it to be relatively painless.

The only thing that I found it that you're better off starting attaching the tracks to the upper side and work down, which allows for any track trimming (of which there was some) is at least hidden on the bottom of the tank.

I did add magnets to the side sponsons for ease of painting and transport. While the attachment is far more robust than the original plastic kit's single thin post, I'd much rather they pop loose than break off when they are inevitably knocked about in gaming.

Definitely looking forward to painting 'em. ...Of course, one could argue that they're about half done already. Hah!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Tactical Squads build commences!

The back half of the Forge World order is now inbound, so I spent some time last night clipping, cleaning and starting to assemble the 40 tac marines that will form the backbone of the army.

Laid out the 40 bases (slate style from Back to Base-ix) and started clipping and cleaning all the legs and torsos. The intent is to do two ten man squads with extra close combat weapons, and one twenty man squad with basic bolters.

The two ten-man squads will primarily be shown carrying bolt pistols and chainswords, with their bolters on slings (once they arrive). I'm planning on picking up a couple packs of the Iron Hands Legionaires they showed off to use as sergeants in the squads (hence the empty bases here and there).

The twenty-man squad is just torsos and legs so far, I'm holding off on adding arms until the Phobos-pattern bolters arrive and I can see how the arm spacing/leveling needs to go.

So far so good, though!

Imperial Guard - Mordian 7th Regiment at Feast of Blades

Just a quick hit today - My buddy Dave and I are planning on attending Feast of Blades down in Denver this coming weekend to participate in the big narrative Apocalypse game on Saturday. I'll be wearing my Mordian 7th shirt, and should be easy to spot. If you're attending the event, stop by and say hello!

I'm planning on taking down the whole regiment which (with the exception of the Leviathan Command Carrier) will be the first time the whole army will hit the table, and be entirely painted! I plan on taking a bunch of pics at the event, should be a really fun time!

Imperial Guard - Apocalypse at Feast of Blades 2013

Massive picture dump today! My buddy Dave and I attended Feast of Blades this past Saturday and threw down the glorious 7th in a massive apocalypse battle that raged all day. At any given time there was about 12-15,000 points on a side, with players coming and going throughout the day. Overall the Mordian 7th was hopelessly outclassed and they were blown off the table quickly and brutally. We were allowed a sort of 'meatgrinder reserves' and as such the overall attrition rate of the army hovered somewhere around 300% with units coming on in one turn and being annihilated in the next, only to repeat the following turn! Here's some shots of the chaos from the event:

Phew! That's a lot of pics! All in all a fun time even though the guard were butchered to a man (several times over). While it was amusing to plonk all of the guard down on the table, it was rather obvious that it's not a viable Apocalypse army. Good times nonetheless!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Contemptors built

Not much hobby time this week I'm afraid, though I did manage to build the two Contemptors which was fun!

The first one is running a pair of kheres assault cannons, which just pours out a ton of shots and with the addition of the mortis rules in Massacre, it's also an effective anti-air model which my army was definitely lacking.

The second contemptor is the jack of all trades variety, with a power fist, and a magnetized weapon arm allowing me to choose from an array of weapon options. At the moment I'm going with a twin linked lascannon, but I do want to pick up a plasma cannon and multi-melta as well.

Here's the pair of 'em, reasonably pleased with how the builds worked out. The iron hands contemptor models have some rather serious gotchas in the build process, all those hoses and conduits hanging down from the abdomen and torso look great but really interfere with the waist and hips. Overall though, great models - I love all the pose options you get with this kit!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Firing up the batch painting machine

While I naturally want to dive in and paint a mess of new tanks (Sicarans and Caestus arrived, woo hoo!), I know that I will regret leaving the infantry for the end and have vowed to get a good chunk of 'em polished off before I work on the fun stuff. In a heresy army, there's usually a fair wedge of infantry to do - big units are the order of the day and the Iron Hands are no exception. I'm still waiting on bits to make the sergeants, vexilla and vox bearers, but there's still a goodly chunk of basic marines to be done. 31 of 'em, in fact!

Started off with a basic black primer, followed by a shadow grey drybrush to catch the upper edges of the armour.

After that was done, all the metal areas were picked out in boltgun metal and then the whole model was given a black wash. Helps to tone down the grey highlights and gives the metal a little definition.

Rather than go entirely black with the armour, I decided the loricated rear leg sections would also be done up in metal. Gives them a little extra visual interest beyond just the basic black armour plates.

Next up was to lay down a basecoat on all the areas that will end up being white - the weapon housings and the legion symbol. As a little reward I'm also painting the two dreadnoughts at the same time, giving me something different to look forward to every 15 models or so!

So far so good!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Proteus Land Raiders (mostly) painted, and more batch painting madness

Little more forward motion. Took a break from the infantry to get the Proteus Land Raiders up to the "just off the assembly line" stage - I'm planning on getting all the vehicles to this point then weather them all at once so they stay consistent. They haven't been matte sealed yet so they're still pretty shiny - lots of reflections from the lamps...

Have to say I really like the Proteus kit, whatever legion next strikes my fancy will definitely be getting a couple of these tanks as well! Looking forward to trying out a more interesting paint scheme on 'em than the black and white of the Iron Hands...

I also made a little more headway on the tac marines, with the whites finished and the initial earthtone laid down on the bases they're really starting to come into focus! ...Well, the picture itself is a little out of focus, but still!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Sicaran battle tanks built

Crazy busy week once again, however I was able to squeeze in a little more painting time on the Iron Hands here and there and they're really starting to look like something at this point! Still another session or two to go however, need to highlight and shadow the bases and add in the squad markings on the knees and greaves. Once that's done they'll get a hit of sealant and then I'll add the waterslide clan markings to the right shoulder pads. Not far from the finish line!

Having gotten that far I decided to reward myself with a little build time and banged together the pair of Sicaran tanks. The kits went together like a dream - by far the easiest FW build I've done in a long, long time. Looking at the pics it appears I need to give the cannon barrels another hot water bend treatment, but other than that they're pretty much ready for the paint stage. Really looking forward to putting a brush to 'em!

The side sponsons are once again magnetized for transport and damage mitigation, and I added a tank commander to one of the turrets to represent Spearhead Centurion Castrman Orth - he's very similar to Sergeant Chronos in 40k, it seems. He grants the tank BS5 and tank hunters which coupled with the 6x Str 7 Rending shots the Accelerator Autocannons put out makes it hell on light vehicles and potentially even to the AV14 so prevalent on the 30k battlefields!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Sicaran painting in progress and Praetor build

Made a little more headway on getting the Sicaran battle tanks painted, got the edge highlighting done and started blocking in the areas which will be white on the weapon housings and icons and put the first brown on the tracks to help define them a bit. So far so good!

Not sure if it needs more white, I'm considering doing the sensor housing on the front of the turret in white as well, though that sort of goes against the "weapon housings in white" theme I've been going with so far. Thoughts?

Started building the legion praetor as well - Iron Father Vladek Kraal. Pretty straightforward build using the FW praetor in Cataphractii terminator armor and the thunder hammer from a modern era terminator. The servo arm came from Bitspudlo, and I'm planning on replacing the hammer head with one from MaxMini once my friend Dave's order arrives and I can pinch one from him.

The army is really starting to come together now - I'll snap a couple army pics soon to see how it all looks laid out so far!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Sicaran size comparison shots

I've been asked by a couple people how big the Sicaran is in comparison to a Land Raider, so while I was working on finishing up the paint scheme on 'em, I snapped a couple comparison shots with it and a 'modern day' Land Raider. It's big!

The main hull is about 3/4ths of an inch shorter than the Land Raider, but the turret makes it a bit taller. It's also about an inch narrower overall.

The Land Raider is about an inch and a half longer, and the overall hull is significantly more substantial, which makes sense as it's a troop carrier.

Overall the Sicaran is much more svelte but I was surprised at just how big it really was when set side-by-side! Since these pictures were taken, the Sicarans have been completed, pics to follow soon!

Heresy Era Iron hands - Contemptor dreads painted

Models are finally starting to reach the finish line - up today is the pair of Contemptor dreads!

Pretty happy with how the bases set off against the darkness of the models, definitely helps them pop a bit. also gives the overall model a little more much-needed color!

The first one has a magnetized right arm so I can swap out the lascannon for other weapons as needed, went with a running pose with this one as though he's charging into the action.

The second dread carries a pair of Kheres assault cannons, and with the release of the Massacre book he can also be used as a Mortis dread, which means he loses Fleet, but if he remains stationary he gains Skyfire and Interceptor. Nothing wrong with that!

Next up are some pics of the motor pool, 3/4ths of which I'm rather happy with, and 1/4 ended up being a bit of a tragedy...

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Sicaran battle tanks painted

Two big ol' chunks of resin rumbled off the assembly line, my new favorite FW kit of all time, the Sicaran Battle Tank!

I just love the design of these guys - they're explained as being the intermediate between the Predator and the Land Raider and I think the sculptors really did a good job tying the two looks together. It's got the trapezoidal track housings akin to the Land Raider, and the rounded turret is a nice call to the Deimos predators.

The Iron Hands have a tank commander character that provides the tank with BS:5 and Tank Hunters which is a pretty nasty combo. Along with the trio of heavy bolters, this tank will pump out 15 shots a turn, hitting on 2's and rerolling armour penetration. Say goodbye to light vehicles, and even Land Raiders could be threatened by it (though proper target selection priority suggests that the Sicaran should concentrate on lighter targets).

Of course, if one is good, two is better, right? I plan on running a pair of them where possible, with the fact that most legions will be throwing 40+ infantry, these tanks will also be invaluable to whittle down the enemy footsloggers. Really looking forward to getting them on the table, hoping to get in a couple test games soon!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - A mess of infantry painted

One of the things about heresy army lists are the big ol' units of marines - it's pretty common to see them in groups of twenty, which meant I had a whole mess of 'em to do for the Iron Hands. I decided on one unit of Tac marines armed with bolters and one unit with bolt pistols and chainswords (the poor man's assault marines). They lack jump packs, but are almost half the points cost!

I'm waiting on the new Iron Hands Legionaries sets to arrive so I can finish off the Vox, Vexilla and Sergeant for the unit (hence the two half-built models and the blank base), but other than that, they're pretty much ready to rock!

I had some issues with the FW order that was destined to become the second squad, so in addition to the sergeant, vox and vexilla, I also needed to wait for the replacement bits to finish off a few 'regular' marines as well. Still, 31 done is a nice feeling!

My buddy Dave was kind enough to let me have one of the leftover thunder hammer bits he'd ordered from MaxMini for his Salamanders, which I think has a much better heresy feel to it for the Praetor than the previous modern era hammer I had on there before. I also added a servo skull to act as his cyber-familiar (grants an additional +1 to his invulnerable save) and some cog-tooth inserts for the shoulder pads. Helps drive home the Iron Hands look pretty well, I think!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Proteus Land Raiders painted, sort of.

More tanks! Always need more tanks. The Iron Hands are known for having a lot of vehicles, and I tried to brink that into the army list as well. There's even more to come after this!

Next up is the slightly disappointing part of the army I'm afraid. The Proteuseses. One of them turned out pretty well, but unfortunately the other one really has problems, as we'll see below. Think I'm going to call it the Short Bus...

This one turned out okay - sort of like the rusty effect on the lower hull.

Might need to push the mud spatter up a little higher on the sides though.

I like big exhausts and I cannot lie...

And now the short bus. From the side it's okay, think the chipping around the access ramps turned out okay but the tracks are pretty wonky - this is the tank where I learned you should start and the top and work down to allow for gaps and possible track removal, rather than follow the directions provided by FW which suggests you start at the bottom and work up. By the time I got to the top, there wasn't quite enough room to fit the top track section and it ended up being a bit raised off the roller on the upper rear. Disappointing.

...And then to compound the disappointment, something happened with the sealant on the front and the finish totally crackled up. Must have had some moisture on it or something. I'm REALLY disappointed about this tank - from the ham-fisted assembly to the wonky sealant level, it just didn't turn out the way I'd hoped. Figure I have three ways to go - either I figure out a way to work that texture in as some sort of weathering (melta scarring, maybe? give it a metal drybrush pass?), use some fine sandpaper to try and remove the crinkly layer and hope I don't jack up the underlying paint too much, or dump the whole damn tank into Simple Green and start again... Argh.

Adeptus Mechanicus - Cydonian Sister painted

After the issues with the Proteus I wanted to switch gears and work on something else for a bit - I find that if I get bogged down, frustrated or bored with a particular project having something else to work on for a while really helps keep me in the hobby mood. In this case, it was time to work on a neat little model I picked up from Blight Wheel Miniatures as part of their halloween promotion.

I'll be using this as a stand-in for a Cydonian Sister (ad-mech assassin), based on the Tempus Fugitives Cult Mechanicus list. I'm really hoping that we'll see FW rules for them in some future publication as well...

It's definitely an interesting model, but it is fiddly as heck - had to pin the arms and head and let me tell ya that was a peril-fraught procedure! Of course, since I've taken this picture I've managed to fumble it and snap one of the arms off anyway. Luckily it was reasonably easy to repair!

A little change of pace like this really was a breath of fresh air - Now I feel ready to work on some more Iron Hands again!

The most accurately named boardgame of all time - OGRE.

It's not all 40k all the time around the Mordian 7th's HQ, and as I'd mentioned quite some time ago now, I'd backed the Kickstarter for Steve Jackson Games reboot of OGRE. This was back in May of 2012, and the packages finally delivered late last week - bit of a wait, that!

However, the long wait was worth it, as the game is absolutely MASSIVE. Weighing in at just shy of 30 pounds, it is truly an ogre of a box! The above picture is the box and just some of the interior stuffing laid out on the coffee table in my living room. The box is 24"x18"x8" and just to give a sense of scale, that's a sharpie laying on the box lid.

On the back of the box under the shrinkwrap holding all the counter sheets was the "Read Me First" page which definitely garnered a chuckle. They weren't kidding, there are over a thousand counters, and I very nearly did go mad!

Also included in the box was a reprint of the old-school Ogre Mk V cutaway poster, which I used to own waaaaaay back in the day, but was lost in a house move somewhere along the way. Really happy to have one again!

I started punching out counters and assembling cardboard pieces around 4 in the afternoon, and by the time I was finished it was almost 8:30 at night. Pretty crummy lighting for the next few pics, I'll try to get some better ones over the holiday weekend. The game includes several vaccu-formed plastic trays designed to hold all of the 3D counters, which was really a nice touch.

There is also a large tray in the bottom of the box designed to hold all of the flat counters, terrain overlays, maps, rules and whatnot. Very well thought-out design, and I couldn't be happier with it! Hoping to introduce my gaming group to it sometime in the next couple weeks - most of them have never played it before, which is a tragedy that I will rectify soon enough!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - The rest of the infantry built!

It was a jam packed and fun holiday weekend, and I hope all the Yanks had a great thanksgiving! Finally had some free time to put together all the remaining infantry for the army - There was a surprising amount of it as well, photo barrage inbound!

First up is the unit I was most looking forward to building, the Cataphractii Terminator squad. Fairly straightforward to build, though I would say that attaching the shoulder guard to the arm before attaching the arm to the body does make things easier.

I went heavy on the plasma for the unit, it amuses me to think that the dangers of wielding the plasma weaponry just means the opportunity for more bionics. "Lost another arm, sir..." Two plasma blastguns and four combi-plasmas should be good for winnowing down enemy heavy infantry.

Next up is the Veteran squad, composed primarily of the new Iron Hands Legionaries kit. These models are positively dripping with cog-teeth and detail, and should contrast nicely to the 'vanilla' tac marines. This squad is armed with a pair of melta guns, a combi-melta and a thunder hammer. The Tank Hunters veteran skill is the obvious choice, then!

Next up are some odds and bobs to make up the command models for the various tac squads. The sergeants were built from the Legionaries kit as well, so they match up as veteran sergeants. The Voxcaster and Vexilla were then attached to some regular marines, which gives them a little extra Iron Handedness.

Then it was time to build something big! The Caestus was a breeze to assemble, though there was a fair bit of hot-water-bending required on the assault booms. One they were straightened out however, there's only about ten pieces to the whole model. The wings are attached via a pin-and-magnet arrangement to allow for easier transport - important, as this thing is quite a bit bigger than I'd anticipated!

Of course, if I'm doing the iron hands this was a foregone conclusion...

It was challenging to build, but not the nightmare that I'd feared. This is probably the most beautifully and intricately sculpted model I've ever worked on, I have to admit I'm worried about doing it justice.

The diorama base is a multi-piece affair to which I've attached a few magnets. The pieces lock together surprisingly well, but this definitely makes it secure. On the gaming base, he's definitely a domineering presence!

Now you know I can't leave you without a pic of the batch painting madness! At this point the basic black and iron has been applied to all of the models above (with the exception of the Caestus), which is the heavy lifting pretty much done. Can't let up on the pace though - there's just a little bit more than month left to go before the event!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Of Cataphractii and Characters

Got some good headway on the batch painting, but decided that after getting all the base black and iron on the models that I would just paint them up in units of ten. I think that the terminators and veterans in particular would benefit from some more individual effort.

That said, I pulled out the terminators and got the white weapon housings and leather laid down on 'em. I also added some cog-tooth pattern to the right shoulder pad and left knee to help Iron Hand 'em up a bit. So far, so good!

Speaking of terminators, I finished up the Praetor a little while back but realized I hadn't actually taken any photos of it. Rather pleased with him, went with the basic blue on the power cables and thunder hammer, and went with a reddish-orange glow on the Volkite weapon based on the cover art from Tallarn:Executioner.

While I was about it I also banged out an Apothecary for the army, went with the color scheme laid out in one of the old compilation books from the RT era - Primarily the default legion paint scheme, with a white helmet, backback and right arm/shoulder pad. Think it worked out pretty well!

Adeptus Mechanicus - Castellax painting continues

Been fiddling around with ideas for lists for the upcoming Betrayal Weekender in Memphis in mid-January at the Memphis Battle Bunker. Definitely looking forward to it! One of the list options I'm pondering is the inclusion of an Adeptus Mechanicus allied detachment - seems fitting for the Iron Hands after all!

Very nearly done with the Castellax now, just needs a little more gold trim here and there and some static grass. Unfortunately it's been bitterly cold here of late (lows of -12F with the days getting all the way up to a blistering 10F) so they're not going to get a sealant coat (and gloss coat on the black faceplates) for quite a while. Brr!

Been knocking out a bunch of Iron Hands as well, pics to follow soon!
