Heresy Era Iron Hands - Cataphractii Terminators Painted

Had a reasonably warm day yesterday and I was finally able to get some models that have been finished for a while now sealed! First up is the unit of Cataphractii Terminators:

The limited palette really worked out well on these guys, as they all have a nice bright blue spot color on the various power weapons and plasma coils. Being vets, I wanted to give them a bit of gold as well, but wanted to keep that subtle.

Not the best pic of the sergeant and plasma blasters, I'll have to rectify that. The sergeant gets a cyber-familar, which boosts his save to an impressive 2+/3++. While I love the reaper autocannons, I found it amusing to have the Iron Hands use a lot of plasma weapons. After all, if it gets hot and blows their hands off then hey - more bionics! Heh. All three got lightning claws as I wanted to get a few swipes in at a reasonable initiative in melee.

In that vein, four of the troopers carry combi-plasmas and power fists. I continued the iron-colored loricated armor on the rear of the models, which matches up with the Mk.III power armour nicely!

The chainfist has always been my favorite terminator weapon, so the unit gets a trio of 'em! To balance out their cost, the models just end up carrying a basic combi-bolter. Pretty pleased with how they turned out, the tall slate basing really makes them rather imposing when compared with the tac marines!

Terrain - Bug Hunt Corridors arrive!

A while back I pitched in on the Bug Hunt Corridors Kickstarter, and have been eagerly awaiting its arrival. Yesterday, my patience was rewarded and a big ol' box showed up! Spent a little time laying things out and put a couple example pieces together and snapped some pics:

I sprung for the level 3 corridor bundle which is a huge whack of laser cut plywood. I was astonished to see just how well organized the various sections were - each in their own bag, and completely separated and cleaned up. No punching anything out, just unbag and go!

The instructions are phenomenal as well, fully exploded diagrams with detailed build order and suggested ideas for making it surprisingly simple! I decided to build one each of the various pieces to get a feel for the process, as we'll see below:

The ubiquitous straight section. There's eighteen of 'em, that's gonna take a while to build!

Included are the option to add a bulkhead door in the middle of the straight sections, though it's a permanent addition. I plan on doing 4 or 5 of these and leave the majority plain straights.

The set included a trio of corners...

Three "T" intersections...

...And three 4-way intersections. I find the small 'internal' corners to be rather fiddly, and the 4-ways have four of 'em each. This is probably the hardest section to assemble in my opinion.

There's also a wide corridor section, with two connector sections and three wide internal sections which will make a nice big open area.

In addition to hallways, there are also a number of rooms. A trio of 'em that attach to the end of hallways and help close off the open ends.

There are also three sections with a room attached to the side of a corridor...

...and a trio with rooms to either side of the hallway.

There are also a pair of larger cargo bays, which were one of the add-on room options. I quite like this one!

And lastly are a pair of Airlocks which provide access to the exterior of the corridor layouts. Quite looking forward to trying out some Zone Mortalis at some point in the future, though I still have a whole bunch more corridors to build before that!

The sections are significantly easier to assemble than I'd feared, but still rather challenging - you really do have to build them in a a particular order and way. All in all I'm really quite pleased with the results, and I definitely consider this a Kickstarter that did things right!

Adeptus Mechanicus - Castellax complete! ...Well 99%

Took advantage of another reasonably warm day to finish off the Castellax and get 'em sealed:

Added a bit more gold trim here and there, I'd considered painting the weapon housings in white but in retrospect I'm glad I didn't - think it would have made them a bit too bright. ...And Christmas-y. I'm going to gloss-coat the black faceplate to match the Thallax, but apparently I didn't screw the lid on tight last time I'd used it, and it was a solid gloopy mess. Gotta pick up a new bottle!

Added the cog-tooth pattern to the left shoulder guard to match the Thallax unit from earlier, always nice to have a common theme running through the various units to tie 'em all together!

Oh the ammo feeds. They were most definitely not the right shape to fit straight out of the bags. Mush hot water bending and a modicum of cursing preceded their fitting!

Similar to the left shoulder guard, the right got roman numerals. The scattering of static grass on the base sets off the red and gold on the models fairly well. I wish I'd made the bases a bit more interesting (or had gone with resin terrain bases), but the rest of the Ad-Mech I have are on this style so I'm sort of stuck maintaining the method. Nevertheless, quite pleased with how they turned out! Seems like they have the potential to be rather nasty on the tabletop as well, though I have yet to give them their first trial by fire!

Next up, more Iron Hands...

Terrain - Bug Hunt Corridors built!

Holy moly was that ever a lot of wood and glue! Spent the last week's hobby time finishing up the build of the Bug Hunt Corridors, which was surprisingly much more fun than I had anticipated. As the sections came together, I just added them to a rambling complex on the hobby table, eventually covering the better part of a 6'x4' area!

Really looking forward to using this set in a game soon, either in a game of Zone Mortalis or in one of our various sci-fi RPG games - seems like it'll be perfect for Rogue Trader or Shadowrun!

For storage, I picked up a good sized plastic tub and spent an hour arranging and rearranging until I managed to find a configuration that would actually hold everything and still be able to get the lid on. At that point I realized that I'd never remember this exact configuration after unpacking it, which was a definite concern!

In order to help things sit flat in the tub, I'd cut a piece of cardboard to more or less fit the bottom, and then did a careful unpack, taking the time to write in the configuration. Job sorted and everything loaded back up in a flash!

Before I packed it up however, representatives from the  Benevolent Cult of the Four Armed Emperor prowled the halls for a bit and they seemed pleased with the new accommodations...

Definitely a nice change of pace to do some building rather than painting for a while, but now I'm itching to get back to the Iron Hands. Just three weeks to go before the event in Memphis!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Ferrus Manus painted!

On holiday break(ish) at the moment which means I have a fair bit of hobby time. After building the bug hunt corridors, I was itching to paint some more Iron Hands but didn't fancy diving into another huge unit. Ferrus Manus it is, then!

I went with the same color palette as the rest of the Iron Hands, though he got a fair bit more gold trim as befitting his status. He comes on a big diorama base, and I enjoyed the opportunity to paint a couple dead Emperor's Children!

I am quite pleased with how his face turned out. As befitting his eventual fate, Ferrus' head was magnetized, which allowed me to paint it separately from the rest of the model. I think his metallic hands/forearms turned out fairly well also - several layers of boltgun metal, silver, and thinned blue washes did the trick!

The model comes out of the diorama base and is mounted on a 40mm base for gaming, and he definitely is a beast compared with a basic marine. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed painting this model, it was hands down the most beautiful sculpt I've ever laid hands on. I was terrified by the prospect of mucking it up, but while it's not a competition paint scheme, I think I did manage to do it justice.

Next up, some overall army shots of the boys in black!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Army Pic Ahoy!

A very [insert your preferred festive greeting] to you all! Hope that as the year draws to a close, all of you lovely readers out there are warm, safe and happy!

I've had a few days off from work (or as near to a day off as I can actually get) and in between doing some last minute shopping and whatnot I pulled out all of the Iron Hands that have been painted so far, and took some time to update the painting chart.

I didn't realize quite how much infantry there was until I laid it all out! Big units seem to be the order of the day in 30k, with the weapons available, casualties come fast and furious. I avoided the lighter transport vehicles for that very reason, the two tactical squads are carried to battle in Land Raiders instead! The Sicarans are designed to take care of the massed enemy infantry, and should be able to knock out any skimmers and light vehicles. A pair of Contemptors (one Mortis with the Kheres cannons and one 'vanilla' with Lascannon and Powerfist) were thematically appropriate, as the Iron Hands are known to utilize them heavily.

The Iron Father and the Terminators are slated to get a Caestus to transport them around, but for now will be relying on the 2-in-6 chance of the warlord trait providing them Deep Strike. Most terminators in the heresy-era ruleset do not get the Deep Strike special rule as standard, which came as a surprise. The army also includes a 20-man unit of quasi assault marines (one of the tac squad options is to replace their bolter with a close combat weapon for free), who are joined by an Apothecary to help keep 'em in the game with FnP. Ferrus will usually join that unit as well, as he's too bulky to ride in the Caestus with the terminators.

Surprisingly close to the finish line with the army! One ten-man squad of vets, the Caestus, and a pair of counts-as tarantula turrets that are still inbound and it'll be complete! ...Until I get a unit of Immortals.

...And maybe a Spartan. Hah!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Caestus painted

Nearly at the finishing line now - the last of the transports was completed over the weekend in the form of a Caestus Assault Ram!

It's a big ol' brick of resin, and it balances precariously on the flight stand. I truly have a fear of it tipping over and mashing flat any miniatures it may fall upon! While it did take a fair bit of hot water bending to get the front assault booms straight and assembled, it was overall a snap to build. It really has a heavy, meanacing look to it - rather suitable for an assault craft!

I used some Iron Hands brass etchings on the tops of the booms and on the sides, but otherwise went fairly minimalist with the paint scheme as befitting the Legion. I did manage to miss one of the aquilas (right on the freakin' middle of the cockpit) which was annoying - generally speaking during the heresy only the Custodes and the Emperor's Children bore the aquila. Ah well, just left it back to de-emphasize it. I do think that I need to add a little cogtooth pattern on it somewhere, perhaps on the wings?

To facilitate storage and transport, the wings are attached via a combination of magnets and pins - the magnets by themselves didn't prove strong enough, and the pins help hold everything straight and level.

With that, there's just one unit of Veterans left to be painted prior to the Heresy Event Weekend in mid-January! ...But there's likely a few more units to be added to the army once I get on the other side of that.

Hope you all have a great New Year, and we'll see you again in 2014!

Heresy Era Iron Hands - Veterans Painted, and something unexpected...

I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year! It's been rather busy on the Real Life(tm) front, back to long hours at work for quarter end and year end fun. Woo. That doesn't mean there's been no hobby time, though - for as of the post, everything that was purchased and planned for the Iron Hands has now been painted! The last unit that was waiting in the wings was the Veteran squad:

They're designed to take advantage of the Tank Hunters upgrade, and are armed with a trio of melta weapons and a thunder hammer to help pick off those pesky vehicles. As befitting their veteran state, they all use the Iron Hands legionaries models which are chock full of cog tooth icons and bionics!

With those out of the way, I really wanted to just paint something for fun, and my eye fell on a trio of minis I'd purchased from Victoria Lamb miniatures which have been waiting to spring forth and shout... Well, you know. Heh. I need to go back in and clean up the faces a bit it seems. Amazing how taking pics shows up all the little screw-ups, eh?

Next up are some really colorful minis to counteract the months of black and iron we've been slogging through!

Tzeentch Renegades - Color! Glorious color!

I have to say that I was getting reaaaaaally bored painting Iron Hands. I quite like their fluff, and they dovetail nicely with my love for the Ad-Mech, but the color scheme is a bit of a drag. That said, I think I may have overcorrected a bit:

Hah! I've had a small allied chaos force lurking on the shelves for over a year now, figured it was time to give them a little attention. First up is a squad of chaos marines dedicated to my favorite of the Big Four, Tzeentch. Squad of nine of course, which denies me a heavy weapon but between the sacred number and the Icon of Flame, Tzeentch will certainly grant them his favor!

While I was at it I worked on the sorcerer, though I'm not at all happy with the state of his face at the moment. That's going to be getting a re-do post haste.

Finally, a quick (and frankly terrible) shot of the painted army so far. Still in the wings are a unit of Thousand Sons (of course), some screamer riders, a FW Helltalon, and some allied Tzeentch daemons. I'll likely give the two marine squads Rhinos, but I think that'll be the extent of it - This will not(!) turn into another 3000+ point army, darn it! ...It's the Heresy Thousand Sons army I'm scheming on that will!

I'm planning to do a couple little 500-1000 point allied forces s for the guard this year, including finishing up the last few Eldar that I'd kept from the previous project, some "Deff Korps uv Kriek" orks and perhaps an Inquisitor's warband or two. Not to mention the aforementioned heresy era Thousand Sons! With the rumors of new guard on the horizon as well, looks like 2014 is going to be a fun year for hobbying!

Orks - Deff Korps uv Krieg, the planning stages

$

I've been taken by the idea of doing a number of small allied forces to supplement my Guard regiment, and thought a small force of Ork mercenaries could be amusing. The last several times I've done Orks they've ended up being Bad Moons, so I wanted to go in a different direction this time - mercenary Orks are traditionally Blood Axes who commonly ape the more regimented guard in their dress and mannerisms, and I've long had my eye on the rather excellent alternate pseudo-germanic/WWI orc range from Kromlech. Thus begins the saga of Da Deff Korps uv Krieg!

While the various packages are winging their way to me, I figured I'd document the process from beginning to end. First up was the army list - as an allied force I decided that I'd restrict myself solely to the limitations of the Allies FOC. That meant 1 HQ, 2 Troops, and 1 each of Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support. ...And that's it. Small, and simple. There's no way this will become an 8000 point debacle of an army. Hey, why are you laughing? Heh.

The HQ choice was simple. Gotta have a Warboss! I love the character in this sculpt, though I'll likely swap out his shotgun with something a bit more suitably imposing as befitting a big boss!

Two Troops choices to fill, but I wanted to keep things simple (and didn't relish painting a huge tidal wave of green), so a pair of Trukkboyz mobs would fit the bill nicely. Kromlech sells a nice 10-man squad, so I picked up a pair of them. I'll likely buy a few extra torsos and whatnot to round the squads off to 12 at some point in the future.

To cart the two squads around I'm intending on picking up a couple of these from Forge World, as they have a nice pseudo-Germanic vibe to 'em.

For the Elites choice, it's hard to go wrong with a unit of Meganobz, and the Kromlech equivalents are absolutely beautiful! I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on these. They'll be getting a relatively basic battlewagon to cart them around, using one I happen to have found lurking in the CoD.

For a fast attack choice, I was torn between going with a unit of Stormboyz (who are generally blood axes) or adding a flyer of some sort, and after the fun I had building and painting the previous Dakkajet I settled on doing a Blitza-bommer this time around. The intent is to build it in such a way as to be reminiscent of a Junkers CL.I, which is thematically appropriate I think!

Heavy Support will be a unit of 3 Big Gunz. Now there are certainly more powerful unit choices in the codex but I really think they suit the theme I'm going for, and for 70 points or so for the three of 'em, they're dirt cheap! Besides, I LOVE these gretchin artillery crew figs, they're simply hysterical. I'm still scheming on colors for the army - I plan on them being relatively subdued color-wise much like their guard namesake, but I'm torn between german greys or leathery browns for their stormcoats. We'll see how the mood takes me when I have the models in hand, I suppose!

Gearing up for the Heresy Weekender in Memphis this coming weekend, it's going to be a blast - expect tons of pics to follow!

Going down to Memphis, part 1 - The Tables

Back from Memphis, where we were nominally going to run the Heresy Weekender at the Battle Bunker this past weekend. Sadly, we had absolutely everyone bail at the last minute, which meant the event didn't happen. Not really thrilled about that, but what can ya do? I decided that I wouldn't let that ruin my weekend, and my buddy Dave and I got in a couple games (and took a boatload of pictures) nonetheless!

The battle bunker is a really cool store, and James and Co. were all great chaps. Having gone to Warhammer World in Nottingham, I can say that the Battle Bunker carries the same vibe and attention to detail and history. Of course, they don't have a Bugman's so there's one big mark in favor of WW, but that's a state/zoning issue rather than a deliberate omission on the part of the guys in Memphis.

I took a ton of pictures, so rather than doing one massive picture dump I figured I'll break it up into more manageable chunks. Today, the tables! Inside, the bunker has the same sort of wall facings and hangings that give it a great feel, and there were a dozen beautiful gaming tables which I absolutely loved. Buckle up for a whole wodge of pics!

There were a couple tables I thought warranted a series of pics for future inspiration for my own tables, first up the imperial sector:

And a gorgeous fantasy table:

Another fantasy table/display table:

There were a ton of cool scatter terrain, I was particularly impressed with these four floating islands each dedicated to one of the four ruinous powers:

I quite liked this floating pool:

And one serious cool but improbably difficult to store piece like this:

Next up are some pics from the display cabinets - some very, very cool stuff to be seen!

Going down to Memphis, Part 2 - The Cabinets

Brace yourself for another picture dump! This time around it's the pics of the display cabinets which were chock full of some great armies:

In broad categories, there were Imperials:

A beautiful Eldar army (I had no idea the FW Phantom was that big!):

And their dark kin:

This just blew me away, I had a chance to chat with the guy that built it, and it was part of a campaign they'd run, with this being his take on what would happen if the dark eldar got a hold of a Phantom.

There were some cool conversions in this dark eldar army as well:

A few Necrons:

And a slew of Orks:

As well as some fun fantasy armies:

The bug eyes on these guys just crack me up:

Next up is a trip down memory lane with their 'historical' cabinets!

Going down to Memphis, Part 3 - A walk down memory lane

Third of four posts on the Memphis trip, this time around all the pics are concentrated on a pair of cabinets tucked away in the back hallway. It was a wonderful trip down the halls of memories for me for sure!

It was amusing to go through the case with by buddy Dave saying "Had that... Had that... Several of those.."

Battlefleet Gothic was a blast, but sadly my local group never really got into it. Still have an Imperial and an Eldar fleet banging around in the Closet of Doom.

These two really tripped my nostalgia trigger. Adeptus Titanicus was sadly missing from the display, but I had multiple copies  of both of these back in the day. How I wish I still did! Sadly the pic of the next shelf down didn't turn out, but it held my favorite Specialist Game of all time - Necromunda!

The original Space Hulk, DeathWing and Genestealer were played hundreds of times with the neighbor kids when I was growing up. Still have the yellow book, but neither Dave nor I had ever seen that "Space Marine Assault" box before. Was quite a shock!

Gorkamorka and Digganob were interesting, but I only ever played it one time. Loved the vehicle rules, but the setting didn't grab me as much as its big brother Necromunda did.

The old Horus Heresy boardgame! Never owned it myself, but played a friends copy several times. On the stack to the right, the Rogue Trader rulebook (sadly buried in the back, for some reason), the red Compendium (which holds the genesis of the Mordian 7th), and a 2nd ed Battle manual.

In the next cabinet was a bunch of old boxes of minis. Loved seeing the RT-era Devastators box again. Squat mole mortar, guard tarantula and a marine land speeder all in one set! ...For some reason.

Speaking of Squats, front and center in the middle of the cabinet. Bam! Still have half a box of these guys lurking in the CoD.

Back in the rear right is the first box I ever bought. Good old RTB001! I remember that day vividly, when I first saw the box and the Rogue Trader book in The Game Keeper, a store that no longer exists in a mall that has also been bulldozed and rebuilt (more than a decade ago, now). The late 80's came rushing back!

A selection of older and well not newer, but less older boxes. The old Predator box is lurking in the back there, really loved that old kit!

This shelf really made me remember the 'good old days'. Three Rhinos in a box for twenty bucks. ...And TWO Land Raiders for not much more!

While the original Rogue Trader rulebook was down in the bottom of one cabinet, they had a nice walk through time in the next one. 2nd Edition was mental, unbalanced, and a hell of a lot of fun. I think it's still my favorite edition, though I'll readily admit that's likely rose-colored glasses, as I haven't actually played a 2nd ed game in going on twenty years.

3rd Edition didn't really leave much of an impression on me. Couldn't tell you the difference between 3rd and 4th at this point, other than it felt rather watered down following the insane asylum that was 2nd. I do think that 5th and now 6th editions were much better systems, but when all is said and done Rogue Trader and 2nd Ed will always hold 1st and 2nd place on the podium for me!

One more post coming up with some pics from the games that Dave and I got into while we were there...

Orks - Deff Korps uv Krieg Battlewagon

Brief break in the Memphis pics to appease the roars from Mork (or possibly Gork) to post some shots of the first vehicle for Da Deff Korps uv Krieg that I finished recently.

Decided to go with a quasi German grey for the vehicles, albeit a very worn and weathered one. There's been a number of weathering techniques I've been wanting to try, but weren't really suitable for use on the Iron Hands.

The whole model was primered black, then given an all-over drybrushing of Boltgun metal. After that I went in and stippled in Sombre Grey, leaving the edges and corners with the metal showing through. I then hit a couple of the panels in Stonewall Grey. Once that was done, the whole model was given a black wash to dirty it up. The tracks and tires were given a heavy drybrush of Dark Flesh, followed by a lighter drybrush of Leather Brown and a Strong Tone wash. Once that dried, they were given a light drybrush of Boltgun metal (to represent the areas where the mud has worn away).

I tried out a sponged-on rust effect in a couple areas, starting with Charred Brown followed by a lighter sponge pass with Dark Fleshtone. Next was an even lighter sponge of Hot Orange, and then the extreme edges were drybrushed with metal. In retrospect I think it could have stood to have one more pass with Fiery Orange to help it pop a bit more, though.

Finally, I tried out the 'painted on scratches' thing here and there on some open areas that hadn't gotten the rust treatment. They're scattered throughout, though I'm still struggling with how many and where they ought to be applied. Figured I'm better off with a 'less is more' approach to start with.

Overall, I'm chuffed to bits with how it's turned out, and I can't wait to get to grips with the rest of the army! The Forge World order showed up, so a pair of half-trakks are soon to follow!

The ork army continues apace - while we're been suffering through some surprisingly heavy snowfall, I've spent the time building a pair of transports for the shoota boyz squads.

I wanted to keep the quasi Germanic feel with the Trukks, and picked up a couple resin kits from Forge World and ended up combining them, making what proved to be my least cost effective dollars-to-points-value models of all time! Quite pleased with how they look, though!

Of course, the two models would have ended up exactly the same if I followed the directions in their entirety, so I tried to deviate from the norm a bit on both of them with some varying decorative bits.

Some extra armor plates and a tow chain on the back breaks up the look a bit. I'll definitely need to paint various armor plates in different colors when the time comes as well.

Overall I quite like 'em! The halftracks tie in well with the Battlewagon, hopefully giving the whole force a cohesive (yet ramshackle) look! ...Now if it would only warm up enough to primer 'em!

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Malcador painting in progress

While waiting for the package of Orky goodness to arrive (shipping from poland takes ages), I have been dabbling with the next heresy-era project where I'm going back to my first 30k love, the Thousand Sons! The plan is to do a primary detachment of Sons, and an allied Imperial Army detachment where I'm going to be kitbashing up some Prosperine Spireguard. ...And while waiting for the packages of bits for them to show up, I dove in on what will be the centerpiece of the Spireguard force, a Malcador Assault Tank!

Just laying on the base colors thus far, still a long way to go. Going with the usual recipe of red, bone and gold - really enjoyed being able to play with some colors after doing the Iron Hands! I went for the Malcador mostly because I've never tried my hand at one before, and to be honest in 40k the tank is somewhat lacklustre. However, in the 30k era, the munitorum and mechanicus were up to the task of keeping it maintained, which means that it is a Fast superheavy. 12" a turn, and can fire everything as though it was stationary (at different targets, to boot). What's not to like?

Having had a chance to work on this one, I'm definitely interested in pickup up a Valdor at some point in the future! I've banged out a couple test models for the Spireguard as well, pics to follow soon!

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Prospero Spireguard test minis

As the wait for the orks drags on (now a week beyond the original delivery window), I spent a little time fiddling around making some Prospero Spireguard to accompany the Thousand Sons in their defense of Tizca. In the book A Thousand Sons, they are described as wearing crimson greatcoats, heavy boots and silver shakoes lined with fur cut from the wings of the snow-shrikes, an indigenous bird used by the Avenians as weapons. Officers were noted to wear crimson jackets decorated with brass buttons and gold frogging. They were also outfitted with silver helmets, curved sabres and laspistols.

I had a bit of a rummage around in the Closet of Doom and pulled out some various bits and bobs and before I knew it I had a command squad built and painted. After spending so much time batch painting, doing these five guys took almost no time at all! I'm not happy with the GW head mixed in with the Perry Miniatures heads, as he ends up looking bulbous or the other all look a bit pin-headed. For the 'real' build they'll all get Perry heads, so they all match up scale-wise.

I'm still trying to find a good set of bases that I want to use for the Thousand Sons and by extension the Spireguard. In the meantime they just got the basic mud and grass - worst case scenario, they'll match my 40k guard and can be used as an allied contingent of some variety there!

Put together a couple basic troopers wearing shakos as well, then ran out of bits. Doh! These are all just proof of concept miniatures however, and based on how they turned out I ordered a mess of bits from Maxmini (torsos), Victoria Lamb (arms), Blight Wheel (legs) and Perry Miniatures (heads). The packages are starting to trickle in, so there will be plenty more to come!

It had been incredibly cold and snowy for the last few weeks and during that time while I'd built all sorts of stuff, it was far to cold to primer any thing and my hobby output sort of ground to a halt. However, a beautiful Colorado day appeared and I undertook a frenzy of primering. So that means it's time for da boyz!

Taking a cue from Colonel Scipio's excellent DKoK, I went with a predominantly brown leather look, with a bit of grey on the helmets to tie them in to the grey armor plating that will be on the various vehicles.

Two ten-man squads will go in the pair of half-trakks, and careen around the battlefield blasting away with their shootas until they inevitably get their ride blown out from under them and bewildered orks are tossed in all directions.

That's the troops choices sorted out - Jobs a good 'un!

While I was about it, i also put a brush to the warboss model, which is just chock full of character. I went with a red sandstone sort of look for the bases, which sets off reasonably well against the blue-grey of the models, but I found my usual reddish-brown base rims just looked poor. Black rims it is!

In other news:

Son of a..!

I'm in for a half dozen of these, and that's no lie.

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Heavy support assembly

Haven't had a great deal of hobby time over the last week, Real Life(tm) has taken more than its fair share! Nevertheless, I've slowly been soldiering on behind the scenes on the Thousand Sons and figured I'd share some build pics.

First up is a whirlwind scorpius, I absolutely love the homage to the original missile launcher from good ol' RTB-01. In fact, I plan on including a heavy support squad armed with missile launchers to match!

I'm also pretty jazzed with the deimos predator executioner. Love my guard executioner and figure it's a no-brainer to have one crewed by marines!

I actually liked it enough that I'm going to have a pair of 'em! This one is built as a command tank for what I eventually plan to make a three strong squadron. The deimos kit was actually surprisingly easy to build, I have to say it was probably the most trouble-free design from FW that I've built in quite some time.

While I was about it, I also banged together a couple lascannons for the Spireguard, using some leftover bits from the Iron Hand sicarans, and the carriages from Curious Constructs which I think work a treat!

The majority of the army is still on hold while I await the bases - my indecision has meant that while I have all the bits to make the models, I have nothing to actually put them on so I've been in a holding pattern, argh. This coming week brings the release of the Imperial Knight kit, so expect to see some towering monstrosities here this weekend!

Orks - Deff Korps uv Krieg Halftrakks and Meganobz Painted

Due to Colorado's schizophrenic weather in the winter, we generally sees the temperature yo-yo between bitterly cold, and surprisingly warm. A couple days ago it was 60F and today it was 8F when I woke up. Gotta love it! During a 'warm snap' I managed to get some some more Orks finished and sealed:

First up is the unit of Meganobz. These were interesting to paint - there's almost too much detail on them, and I struggled to get some color into them. My plan to have the armored plates in the army painted grey sort of let me down on these guys, I think these models could really benefit from a more striking color scheme. If I do more Bad Moons in the future, I will definitely be getting another unit of these models!

I took several of your fine readers suggestions and tried to push the difference between the two halftrakks a bit further. I added on some various plates and detail bits, and I think it breaks up their outlines enough to keep them visually separate but thematically similar.

They got the same basic paint scheme as the earlier battlewagon, and will carry the two shoota boyz mobs into battle. Very near the end of this little boutique project, just the Blitza-bommer to go! Since it's dumped a couple inches of snow on us since these were completed, and a big box full of Eqyptian-themed bases arrived recently, expect to see a mess of Thousand Sons build pics to follow soon...
