Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Spireguard units and heavy support squad built

Been a crazy week and not a lot of downtime to get some blogging in - My thoroughly ridiculous band is taking a breather from doing a ton of recording and we have the first live gig in almost six months coming up tomorrow, so we've all been practicing like madmen! That's not to say there's been no hobby activity though - A little while back the Egyptian-themed bases I'd ordered arrived, which meant I could finally begin the build process on the Thousand Sons!

I was really jazzed to finally assemble the first couple squads of Spireguard, and I have to say I'm thoroughly chuffed with how they've turned out. Can't wait to get some paint on 'em! Still need to build a platoon command squad, and I'm still vacillating on what the HQ choice will be. I figure I'm probably better served waiting until the new guard codex arrives, but I'm assuming that the basic infantry squad won't be changing too drastically.

While I was about it I pressed on and built the heavy support squad for the army - went with missile launchers partially due to the fact that the multiple munitions grant a fair bit of tactical flexibility in anti-horde, anti-vehicle and (at a pinch) anti-aircraft capability, but also as I like the idea of them hanging around near the Scorpius which sports the same general look.

In the meantime I've started working on a pair of Knights, with a third one in an early build process. Pics to come!

Well it should not come as no surprise that I ended up picking up a couple of the new Knights! I started with a pair of Paladins, to get a feel for how the kits go together before I tried any serious conversion. While the kit allows for quite a bit of pose options with the upper torso, arms and head, the legs are more or less required to be built in the standard pose (unlike the Wraithknight which just requires a little peg removal to 'unlock' the legs). The ankles are essentially cast at an angle, so will require a bit of engineering to reposition.

I followed the suggestion to leave the armour plates off in order to allow easy painting of the under-structure, which does definitely speed things up. Super fast metal basecoat/wash/drybrush and it's 90% done!

I decided to go with the colors of House Krast (see minor rant below), as I thought the blue and yellow would set off nicely against the red and white of the Adeptus Mechanicus I planned to ally them to in my Heresy armies.

The plan is to paint one up as a squire and one as a knight, and the third as-yet-unbuilt one as a senechal. The squire will be predominantly blue, the knight in alternating halves, and the senechal will be in a quartered pattern.

After getting the silver edging on one set of armor plates, I tacked them together to see how it looked - I quite like it! I still need to add in the various striping and iconography, which will add in a little spot color and flair.

...And now the minor rant. I was pleased to find the copy of the Knight Companion book I'd ordered when I stopped home for lunch today, and I was eager to read up on the expanded fluff on house Krast. Flipped to the relevant page and surprise! Their livery is now apparently red and white. What the?! The fluff all ties in well with the little tidbits that were previously alluded to in the old Epic materials, but there is absolutely no mention (that I can see) about the old paint scheme. They are mentioned as having sworn fealty to the Mechanicum during the Heresy, so I'm going to be justifying it as the blue and yellow being their original scheme prior to their re-dedication (when they would presumably change their colors to the new red and white). Problem solved!

A bit more forward motion on the knights!

Finished the trim on the second paladin and starting sketching in some livery ideas in pencil. The upper right shoulders will have a quartered yellow and white/red striped pattern, which will add a little spot color to the blue and yellow armor plates.

Was able to get the second paladin assembled as well. At this point it's all detail work and basing, but the heavy lifting is done!

I'd snapped a couple pics early on in the build process and apparently never posted them. Here's a shot of the GW knight as compared with the 28mm Dreamforge Leviathan Crusader. The Crusader is significantly larger, and pretty much cements my intention of running it as a proxy Warhound (which means I need to build a second arm weapon).

They're quite comparable to my BigDaddy/Blight Wheel knights, perhaps a little smaller but not appreciably so! Overall I have to say I'm in love with the GW kit, and I'm sincerely hoping that they (or more likely Forge World) end up doing some of the other variants. The codex does mention the Lancer and Castellan which gives me hope! Forge World has confirmed that the Knights will be included in their upcoming Heresy books, which I'm rather happy about. Pretty much assures that they're going to be doing upgrades/potential full kits!

...Man I'm gonna be broke!

Just a quick hit today - I decided to take a little break from working on the knights and took advantage of a relatively warm day to primer the Spireguard and set to painting!

Fairly straightforward, though updated slightly from the test models paint scheme. The greatcoats are red with a bone-colored interior, and the trooper's trousers, gloves and epaulets are done in a blue-white. A dab of gold here and there, and all that remains are some final fine detail and the bases!

Real Life(tm) continues to rampage though my free time, which has meant that over the last week I've barely put brush to miniature. However, I was able to polish off the Spireguard:

Overall I'm quite pleased with them! A friend of mine has suggested that I ought to paint the hieroglyphs to represent debris from recently-destroyed Tizcan architecture, which sounds good but I fear may make the bases too busy. For now I'm going to leave these models as-is, and perhaps try out a test base to see how it looks.

Unfortunately I've been levied with a huuuuuge financial burden that come out of left field, so expect to see large chunks of my miniature collection going up on the auction block soon to help offset the bills. Not what I thought I'd be doing this week, but needs must...

Imperial Guard - Mordian 7th Regiment Superheavy Tanks

While I've been pulling out models to photograph in order to get some stuff up on the auction block, it came to light that I never actually took any painted shots of the two superheavy tanks I'd finished up for Feast of Blades late last year. Since I had the camera out, it seemed only fair to rectify that situation!

First up is the Macharius Omega. I've always loved plasma weapons, gets hot rules and all. What better way to celebrate that than with a huge honkin' plasma blastgun!

And no imperial guard army is complete of course without including a Baneblade! This is, I believe, the seventh baneblade I've built over the years (and the eighth I've owned). Fair to say that I love this tank, and the plastic kit is a joy to assemble!

I'm still awaiting full discovery on how dire the upcoming pillaging of my finances is going to be, and sadly it's not inconceivable that the entire Mordian 7th army might have to go on the block to help offset the costs. That's going to be a last resort however - other armies I've done have come and gone (with startling frequency I'll admit) but the thought of having to put the 7th up really does not appeal. That said, the first salvo of miscellaneous sales have gone live, and there's a second wave of more esoteric findings from the depths of the Closet of Doom to come...

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Heavy Support Squad Painted

Managed to get in a little hobby time over the past week, and put some paint on the heavy support squad I built a little while back!

I'm holding out for FW to make shoulder pads with the Thousand Sons symbol, which means at the moment they look a little dark overall - the bone color will brighten them up a bit.

Originally the missile launchers were all boltgun metal and gold, but at the last minute I went with bone white instead. As a little decoration I added a little curlicue as though the barrel is an hieroglyphic eye.

The models all have a little bit of a blue spot color on the eyes as well as the hoses on the backpacks. I'm thinking that perhaps a little bit of static grass on the bases might provide a bit more splash to them, thoughts?

Been getting beat up by Real Life(tm) for the last several weeks, so there hasn't been time for hobby stuff of late. Snatched an hour after work today however and banged out the base red on a trio of heavy support units!

Standard red recipe - Dark Flesh basecoat, heavy drybrush with gory red followed by a lighter drybrush of blood red, and then the whole shebang gets a wash of carroburg crimson. These will need to dry for a while, but next up will be the bone color step. Going to be doing the various inset panels on the front and sides of the rhino chassis, as well as the weapon housings on the turrets - looking forward to getting stuck in!

Managed to sneak in a couple more hobby hours and put some further work into the rhino variants - so far so good! Still more detail work to go, then it'll be time to figure out the weathering.

Sticking with the relatively limited palette that was used on the spireguard with bone, blue and gold. So many rivets, makes me shudder to think how many are going to be on the new Falchion !

While I was about it, I'd knocked together a quick sorcerer to act as an HQ choice in the short term while I scheme on how to do up some convincing character models (or wait for FW to do some). Started blocking in the basic red on him before having to call it a night. So far so good!

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - An unplaned Siege Master

Hello everyone! Another rough couple weeks essentially devoid of hobby output, sad to say. I was able to squeeze in an hour of build time and I set to building what was originally planned to be a Master of Signals model for the Iron Hands. Since that never entirely coalesced, I figured I'd repurpose him for the Thousand Sons!

I found out after adding him to the army list that a Master of Signals isn't actually allowed to have a combi-weapon. However, after flipping through the options I noticed that the Siege Master also carries a nuncio-vox and is allowed to have the modeled combi-plasma. Simple head swap and the addition of a khopesh-shaped power weapon and job done! Had never considered the Siege Master for the Iron Hands as they didn't have a heavy weapon squad, but in the Thousand Sons granting Tank Hunter and Wrecker to the missile launcher team? Oh my yes!

Was able to sneak in a bit of build time over the weekend, and cranked out the basic troopers for Assault Squad Mekata. It's been nice enough out that I engaged in a battery of primering over lunch today in hopes of getting some painting time in, but managed to snap a quick pic prior to that. Like the previous heavy weapons squad, this squad will be getting their left shoulder pads later on (once FW gets around to making them).

I'm holding off on building the sergeant for this squad and the upcoming tactical squad while I wait for various bits to arrive. The intention is to use some bits from the possessed sprues on each of the sergeants to give the army a little nod to the Flesh Change. Should be fun!

After what's been a bit of a hiatus, I've actually been able to slop a little paint around! Rather than try and paint in the heat of the hobby loft in the afternoons after work, I've shifted my schedule around a bit and started getting up an hour earlier than normal and bang out a color or two each morning before work. Has actually been a rather relaxing way to start the days!

Since I've been doing a color or two a day in an hour or so rather than a half a dozen or more in one big go, I've taken to snapping a picture when each session is complete. This is the basic Vallejo Dark Fleshtone with a heavy drybrush of Red Gore, which is where it all begins. Super quick and dirty, I use a big ol' beaten up brush and don't worry too much about slop as it'll all get cleaned up in later steps.

Then the upper surfaces are given a further drybrush of Blood Red. The upper surfaces of my fingers, the desk and the old shirt I was wearing also got a layer of Blood Red when I fumbled the bottle. Whoops! Suffice it to say, getting the red on is not a fastidious or tidy process.

The final step in the red is to tie it all together and tone it down a bit with a thorough wash of Carroburg Crimson. In general I'll leave the models to sit and dry for a good long time at this point, as I've learned I'll otherwise inevitably put my finger on something and smear it/smudge it.

Next up is all of the metal on the weapons, the various joints at elbow and knee, and the backpacks. Pretty basic Vallejo Gunmetal followed by an Army Painter Dark Tone wash. This stage really starts to sharpen up the models, as the metal goes down carefully covering any slop from the earlier red stages.

Finally it was time to start picking out the details in Vallejo Glorious Gold, followed by a Reikland Fleshshade wash. Once the wash is thoroughly dry, the upper areas are touched up with a little more Glorious Gold. The gold does down right over the red, which I find brings a nice warm tone to the color - I find gold to be more translucent than one may expect, the under-color will affect the final tone of the gold significantly.

So far so good. Still a ways to go of course, over the next few days they'll get the ivory and blue treatment - it's definitely felt good to get painting again!

A little more early morning painting time before work and the squad is nearing completion!

Once the base red and gold is on, the paint scheme really speeds up - I figure they'll be more or less complete with one more morning's worth of brush time.

I'd initially left the shoulder pads off these and the prior heavy support squad with the understanding that the next book FW would produce would include the Thousand Sons, and as such they'd be putting out legion-specific shoulder pads. From what I'm reading now however, the Prospero book has been pushed back so I'm considering adding the blank shoulder pads and just hand-painting the chapter symbol. ...what will end up being upwards of 90 times. Hmm, maybe I will wait! :)

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Tactical squad Hesyre build process

The schizo weather here in CO continues, with lashings of snow followed by several days in the high 70's, and with torrential rain, tornadoes and hail moving through this evening. Pretty much par for the course for springtime in the Rockies!

In the meantime I've started the build of the twenty-man tactical squad for the heresy era Thousand Sons - though the Prospero book has been postponed until sometime in 2015 (or beyond), every heresy army needs at least one big ol' blob squad of bog standard marines! First things first, sorting out which legs fit on which bases. This step ended up taking a surprisingly long time. The MkII legs have a very wide stance, and the bases I'm using didn't want to cooperate particularly well it seemed. Got there in the end, though!

Once the legs are on, time for torsos and arms. In general when I glue on torsos I'll take it in turn to glue one on twisted to the left, one twisted to the right, and one straight forward, then repeating the pattern. This helps give the models a little dynamism, instead of all just pointing in the same basic direction. Once the torsos dry it's time to add the arms and bolters - I'll generally glue the right arm on first, followed by the left arm which is glued in place with the palm of the hand just slightly lower than the level of the top of the right hand's fist - this means that when the bolter is glued in place, it fits juuuust right. About 80% of the time, that even works as intended and I don't have to pry the right arm loose and reposition it. Heh.

Placement of the head in relation to the body is incredibly important at this point, and is what really sets how natural/dynamic the models will end up looking. A good rule of thumb is to have the face pointing either in the direction of the weapon's muzzle, or in line with one of the feet if the muzzle is pointing in a direction outside the arc described by both of the models feet. The above shot illustrates the idea - the 1st, 3rd, and 5th model's weapons are within the arc of the feet and so the head faces the direction of the muzzle. On the 2nd and 4th, the muzzle of the weapon is outside that arc, and having the head pointing in the muzzle direction would make the model seem as though it's twisting around in an awkward pose. Having the head pointing in line with one of the feet gives the impression that the model is advancing with the bolter held across its chest.

Here's the whole unit with heads. Overall they feel very natural, though relatively reserved, which I think is suitable for the tactical marines - they definitely give off a different vibe from the more bombastically posed assault marines. You may notice on the 2nd row from the front, on the far right I broke my posing rule and the bolter's muzzle and the head's eyeline are both outside the arc described by the model's feet, which means he ended up looking a little awkward. Ah well, he'll consistently be the first casualty when the unit starts taking fire!

I wanted to make an homage to the previous version of sergeant Hesyre, though I'm still awaiting bits to finish him off. The poor sergeant is suffering from a touch of the fleshchange, it appears!

Lastly, the right shoulder pads and backpacks are attached and the squad is more or less ready for primer. ...Assuming it doesn't snow tomorrow, that is!

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Sergeants reporting!

I've been in a bit of a holding pattern for most of the characters for the army while I awaited a number of packages to wing their way to me from various points across the globe. Today however the critical box arrived on my doorstep, and I immediate dove in to get Sergeant Mekata and Sergeant Hesyre built:

Sergeant Mekata gets a suit of artificer armour, a plasma pistol and a power weapon. Very happy with how he's coming along, and as soon as he's complete the assault squad will be done!

Sergeant Hesyre is a redux of his previous incarnation - I tried to get the pose to show that he's looking on in horror as the flesh change begins to overtake him. This is carried through onto his shoulder pads which are also starting to get a little spikey!

Over the last few mornings I've been getting up early (to take advantage of the cooler temperatures) and managed to get the base colors laid in on the tactical squad, and I spent a little time today bringing the two sergeants up to the same level - hoping I can finish them all off in one big push this weekend!

Once the bits showed up and I was able to get the sergeants built, it was the work of a couple mornings to finish them off!

Assault squad Mekata was essentially complete already, just had to bring the sergeant up to snuff and get them based. Easy peasy!

Tactical squad Hesyre took a bit more doing, but I'm pretty well satisfied with how they've turned out. Still scheming on the shoulder pads - I have enough sourced at this point, but need to sort out an easy way to get them painted.

Got a few more units in the offing for the Thousand Sons - while it's good to get some basic troops more or less out of the way, it's definitely time to paint something a little more fun!

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Javelin squadron Qaa begins

Got some hobby time in over the weekend and got a start on the trio of Javelin land speeders planned for the army. I'd picked up these initially early on in the Iron Hands frenzy but decided they didn't fit the aesthetic I was going for. I'd built one to completion and primed it just to give the kit a try (had never built one before) but it turned out to be such an easy kit that I went back and finished the other two while the primer was drying on the first!

First thing of course is to lay down the base reds and metals. One exceedingly messy couple hours later, they're all up to snuff. I took a recommendation to keep the crew separate for painting, and they may even fit when it comes time for final assembly. We'll see!

Rummaging around for some bases to stick them to, I ran into a couple cavalry bases. I haven't played fantasy since ~1993, which means these bases have been lurking in the Closet of Doom for over twenty years. ...Yikes!

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Characters ahoy!

$

I'm finding I'm not enjoying painting the Javelins as much as I might have expected, so I set them aside for a bit to work on a couple characters instead. I'd laid the foundational red, boltgun metal and gold on these three models when I was working on the blocks on infantry, so it was mostly a matter of working on the details! First up is the initial sorcerer for the army, Ankhu Anen:

FW recently FAQ'ed the horus heresy army lists, downgrading the maximum mastery level to 2, which makes running a Thousand Sons army a little tough using the vanilla legion rules. No matter, I'm sure that they're get a boost when the book is released. ...In two years. [sad trombone]

Next up is Siege Breaker Megiddo, who will be joining the missile launcher-toting heavy weapons team. Granting Tank Hunters to the unit as well as the opportunity to fire on any units who happen to deep strike nearby? Yes please!

Lastly is Apothecary Thothmes, who will be joining the 20-man tactical blob squad, providing them with a much needed feel no pain save. No real surprises there, pretty much every heresy army I've ever seen includes at least one 20-man tac squad with an apothecary, it's just the done thing.

I'd mentioned not enjoying painting the Javelins, but that's mostly due to not finding a great way to hold them while painting - they're a little too heavy to try and pin onto a painting handle, and a little too irregular to delicately hold in hand comfortably without risking putting a finger or palm into a previously painted area that hasn't dried thoroughly. Nevertheless I've managed to get the gold on and start blocking in the areas which will be leather and bone. Not too far to go now!

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Expeditionary Navigator Fortunato Locarno

A friend of mine was able to attend the recent Heresy Weekender in Nottingham and was gracious enough to pick up one of the event-only Navigators and mail it (along with some other event goodies) across the pond to me. Woo-hoo!

I've always loved the lore behind the Navigator Houses, it's a fascinating sub-culture in the 40k universe - they are inextricably woven into mankind's history and exploration of the galaxy, and they have incredible power and influence that they can bring to bear. This fellow will be joining my Thousand Sons army as Expeditionary Navigator Fortunato Locarno - whom I envision as being the great great (great great etc) grandfather of Lustram Locarno, the navigator called out in the RT-era rulebook.

He'd also sent along a couple of the event catalog pamphlets which to my surprise actually included rules for the Navigator! Granted, they were written for use with 6th ed, so some of the rules don't really apply anymore - still, he'll be a fun addition to the army!

Heresy Era Thousand Sons - Terminator Squad Phosis built

$

0
I managed to get some build time in over the weekend and put together Terminator Squad Phosis. 9 Terminators in modified Saturnine-pattern armour using Grey Knight legs and arms (Titan is a moon of Saturn, so I've always assumed the GK armour is what FW refers to when they mention the Saturnine pattern) and resin torsos, shoulder pads and heads I'd picked up a while back but never got around to using.

The intent is to keep them as basic as possible (combi bolters and power weapons) in order to keep the cost of the squad down. The whole unit clocks in at 305 points, which isn't bad at all! I intend to do a unit of Cataphractii terminators to act as Magnus' personal honour guard The Scarab Occult, but I'm holding out hope that FW will make them (as they've been cranking out legion-specific terminators for many legions).
